SALES get underway at Cavan next week, where a selection of sport horses, youngstock and registered Irish Draughts come under the hammer over two days.

In keeping with the diminishing foal returns, the Spring Sale catalogue is notably lighter this year but nevertheless offers an interesting and quality range of entries.

Among the highlights is a renewal of last autumn’s popular and highly successful Premier Pony Sale. The lots in this group are spread throughout both days of selling, and feature several grade A ponies as well as younger prospects with potential.

The weighted emphasis on performance continues through to the horses, which offers plenty of competition stock, together with some proven hunters, and a modest number of four and three-year-olds.

Adding to the variety, a small group of youngstock (26 lots) and Irish Draughts (10) bring the opening day to a close.

Among the wide array of covering sires is the numerical leader OBOS Quality (4), as well as Glenayre Silver Fox, Hold Up Premier and Watermill Swatch, who all have three progeny apiece. In the young stock division, Harlequin Du Carel heads the list of sires with three progeny forward, while there is no stand-out sire in numerical terms in the Irish Draught section.
