THE sport horse sales’ season kicks off next Wednesday where a one-day sale at Cavan offers a catalogue of around 110 lots. Lighter in number than 12 months ago, there is nevertheless an attractive selection of both horses and ponies of all ages.
The stallion list is varied and, illustrating the diversity, no one sire is especially prominent. There are however three sires with two progeny forward apiece, namely the Irish Draught sire Boherdeal Clover, the traditionally bred grade A show jumping sire Cottage Fire and the Connemara pony stallion Murvey Ronan.
Ponies
Lot 9 Ardataggle Lady, reg 14yo gr m 138cms. Consigned by last year’s sale-topping vendor, this show jumping mare needs no introduction. A grade A performer and the winner of 866 SJI points to date, she has competed at the RDS on two occasions, qualifying to jump in the main arena. In last year’s Spring Tour, she completed in third spot.
Lot 10 Chester, reg 7yo gr g 148cms. Another eye-catcher among the 33 ponies on offer is the fully warranted Chester, a versatile individual with hunting and show jumping form. He has followed the Longford Harriers for two seasons while in his first season show jumping under rules, he clocked up 15 SJI points.
Lot 14 Brickey Echo, reg 10yo gr m 146cms by Ashfield Echo I Love You out of Omey Meave (Ferdia). One of several of the native breed on offer, this class one Connemara mare has competed in classes up to and including 1.20m. Carrying a career total of 180 SJI points, she is described as competitve and careful and, only for sale as her rider is outgrown, has also been successful in working hunter classes.
Lot 24 Bracken Boy, reg 7yo b g 143cms by Mallmore East (dam by Mulroy Boy). Carrying bloodlines going back to Tulira Robuck, this pony has plenty of competition mileage. A full Connemara, he has hunted, competed in training shows and hunter trials. Easy in all repsects, he is thought to have the makings of a smart working hunter prospect.
Lot 44 Ballafadda Tiffany, reg 9yo gr m 150cms (life cert at 148cms) by Glenayre Silver Fox out of Ballafadda Lass (True Connection). A useful show jumper and all-rounder, this pony has show jumped in classes up to 1.10m, winning 63 SJI points. She has well established flat work, has hunted for two seasons and is considered ready to step up to 1.20m
Competition horses
Lot 35 Ballinaclough Shannon Echo, reg 9yo g by Shannondale Sarco out of Shannondale Echo (Cavalier Royale). One of the standout lots, this gelding is a winner of an BE 100 event and has clocked up numerous placings. A straightforward, genuine individual, he has also show jumped and is a full-brother to the event horses Shannondale Noah (CIC*) and Shannondale Celeb.
Lot 59 Heartland, reg 7yo b m 168cms by Lougherne Cappuchino out of Out Of Africa (Amiro M). A well related (damline not recorded on HSI) half-sister to the Laura Chapot-ridden Out of Ireland, currently jumping 1.40m. A winner of 65 SJI points to date, this mare is competing at jumping 1.10m-1.20m level and is ready to produce further.
Lot 63 Cloverhills Playboy, reg 7yo b g 173cms by Pacino out of Meadstown Flash (Holy Cross). The winner of 58 SJI points to date, this gelding has competed in classes up to 1.20m. Thought to have the potential and the paces to make an event horse, he has also taken part in riding club activities and has been lightly schooled across country.
Lot 66 Cottage Park Boy, reg 7yo ch g 171 cms by Frankfort Boy out of Bouncing Lily (Grange Bouncer). This traditionally bred gelding could appeal to the showmen. Easy and straightforward, he was placed at the RDS last year, both in the working and show hunter classes.
Lot 70 Woodpark Rebel Gold, reg 6yo gr/dun g 152cms by Dunlewy Gorsawk (dam by Kingstown Chunky). Not overly big, this striking sort is a real eye-catcher. He was the reserve champion at Clonmanny Show in 2018 and thought likely to excel in any sphere.
Lot 71 Kilrodan Duchess, reg 6yo b m 162cms by Boherdeal Clover out of Kilrodan Special O (Rich Rebel). A well related full-sister to the advanced event horses Kilrodan Queen B and Kilrodan Ambassador. With eventual broodmare potential, she is now ready to progress as either an event horse or a show jumper.
Lot 73 Mosstown Maggie May, reg 6yo b m 155cms. Described as a HOYS quality lightweight show cob, this mare has been officially measured for the coming season. She has also show jumped successfully and has competed in dressage classes.
Lot 86 Killadeas April First, reg 5yo b m 162cms by Mermus R out of Killadeas Cruz (Cruising). Out of the useful grade A jumping mare Killadeas Cruz (1.30m), this mare has a good temperament, is quick to learn and ready to produce.
Lot 88 Glengoyne, reg 5yo b g 160cms by Carrick Diamond Lad out of Glenlossie (Boherdeal Clover). This gelding is the second progeny out of the Ballymaloe All Ireland final winning grade A mare Glenlossie (1.20m). He is currently jumping a course of fences, has schooled well across country and is ready to take on to compete in any activity.
Lot 90 Kwickly For Ever, reg 5yo g by Ephebe For Ever (dam by Calvinos). Sire jumped to 1.60m while the dam is related to numerous good performers. This gelding is competing at training shows.
Hunters and all-rounders
Lot 42 SV Mary Jane, reg 10yo gr m 168cms by Loch Cruise. This seasoned mare has been well hunted with the Donegal Harriers, where she will go first or last. A very good performer over any country, she is also capable of embarking on a competition career.
Lot 56 Ravens Hearts N Clover, reg 7yo b m 16.3hh by Boswell Mr Heartbreaker out of Carnmore Clover (Coopers Hill). A successful campaigner in amateur show jumping classes, this easy mare is described as an honest all-rounder.
Three and four-year-olds
Lot 101 Madame L, reg 4yo ch f 168cms by Luidam out of Madame C (Chippison). By the very commercial Luidam out of a sibling to four graded show jumpers, this filly was broken last year and is now ready to produce further.
Lot 109 Unnamed, 3yo b g 165cms by Quite Capitol 11 out of AFS Switchblade (Mermus R). Dam is a half-sibling to several top performers including the puissance specialist Seapatrick Cruise Cavalier, and the Canadian-based show jumpers River Bird (1.60m) and High Jack (1.40m). Grandam by Cavalier Royale.
