IT’s Year 13 for Horse Sport Ireland (HSI) central stallion inspections at Cavan Equestrian Centre next week. Following last year’s ‘virtual’ inspections, due to Covid-19 and EHV-1 outbreaks, the inspections are once again open to the public and spectators are very welcome to attend.
Some 43 entries, between 22 Irish Draught and 20 Irish Sport Horse candidates, plus one Irish Sport Pony, have been received for the two days of selections.
Next Wednesday, March 23rd, sees inspections starting at 8am for the 22 potential Irish Draught Class 1 candidates while the first batch of Stage 1 Irish Sport Horse entries also takes place that afternoon from 3pm – 9pm.
The following day (Thursday, March 24th) focuses on Irish Sport Horses. Stage 1 inspections begin for both the Irish Sport Pony and Irish Sport Horse entries, followed in the afternoon by the Stage 2 (under saddle) candidates.
Numbers are on a par with last year, when 44 stallions were presented.
There are no thoroughbred entries this year. The previous successful thoroughbred candidate was Tommy McMahon’s Glen Moss, one of the entries in tomorrow’s Irish Draught Horse Breeders Association (IDHBA) Stallion Showcase. This takes place tomorrow (Sunday, March 20th) at Mullingar Equestrian Centre, starting at 12 noon sharp.
Also returning to the stallion parade calendar is the Stallion Show and Equine Expo at Cavan Equestrian Centre the following Sunday (March 27th) at 11am.
It’s also a busy week for Connemara enthusiasts with an Open Day taking place tomorrow (Sunday, March 20th, 2-6pm) at Diamond’s Equine Renvyle. Meanwhile the Connemara Pony Breeders Society (CPBS) will also host a stallion parade in Clifden Showgrounds next Sunday (March 27th). This is part of the Spring Weekend programme which includes three days of colt inspections at both Ballinasloe and Clifden.

Bally Vesta Silver Diamond, Fintan Himself, Huntingfield Ruler, Killinick Bouncer, King Alton, Leighlin Emperor, The Swarty Hero and Welcome Emperor were the successful Class 1 Irish Draughts. Coolatin Apache (Irish Pony), Royal Concorde (ISH), Royal Storm (TB) and Sirillio (TB) were approved too.
