OWNER Sara Wilkes reports that her Welcome Flagmount mare Daisy O’Keeffe, has made a good recovery. The mare and her Cardento Royal colt were at Roscommon show when the mare started to colic and was quickly tended to and monitored by local vet Donal Flynn of All Creatures Veterinary Clinic in Roscommon

“Saturday was pretty harrowing for us as we tried to keep her walking. My daughter [Jennifer] and her friends [Amber Killeen and Katie Frazer] were amazing, considering they are 14 and 15 and kept their cool throughout.”

Transferred to Philip McManus’s Rockmount Clinic, another ‘Good Samaritan’ Liz Murphy stepped in to take the foal home, while his dam was moved to Claregalway where she recovered.

“I can’t believe the mare made it, she is such a fighter,” said Sara. “Her breeding career is now over, she has given me two fab Cardento Royal foals, which we are keeping. She is 16 and I have owned her since she was three. We plan to get her fit and my daughter can jump her next year if she can hold her, as she is a bit of a tank to jump!” The silver lining is her foal “is now totally halter-broken after being led for four hours on Saturday!”
