1.25 Wexford Racecourse Mares Maiden Hurdle 2m 4f

Butterflyvespiere showed ability on two hurdles starts before disappointing when running in a bumper last time. She wouldn’t be the first horse to underperform without the hurdles to help, so could be the answer to a tricky opening contest. The bare form of her two runs looks good enough to make her the one to beat.

Wat Ua Doin is an interesting runner on her first start for Matthew Smith. The young Meath trainer has done well with similar cast offs in the past, so it wouldn’t surprise if she were to raise her game on her stable debut.

Clondaw Secret is given another chance to show that he is much better than recent starts. An impressive winner of his maiden hurdle at Navan in December, he disappointed twice since but arguably had valid excuses both times.

He gives the impression that he needs to quicken off a fast pace, something that was lacking in recent small field races.

Great Bear looks a serious danger as he has developed into a solid performer in handicaps of late.

He now looks a tough, streetwise young horse who will battle in a race such as this.

Darkened looks a very well handicapped horse over hurdles, if and when the market speaks in his favour. He should prove far too strong for these rivals if ready for this race but there is a suspicion that all roads could lead to Galway. Having said that, he could win here and then go on to Ballybrit, so his strength, or lack of, in the betting should be noted.

Datsdacraic makes his handicap debut here after just the three maiden starts so is open to significant improvement. He has been found a very weak race to enter handicap company, so a big run would not surprise.

All The Angels, who is back on a fair mark, could be the each-way value in a moderate contest. Eoin McCarthy can do little wrong at present, so anything he sends out has to be respected. Despite being off the track since disappointing last October, this six-year-old is unlikely to want for anything in terms of fitness.

Broken Ice has yet to show anything solid over hurdles but was a fair sort on the flat. One would imagine him capable of winning a race such as this at some point over the coming months. He will get few easier opportunities than this one.

Se Mo Laoch should take beating as he reverts to hurdles off a very appealing mark. Last seen when just denied off 129 in a handicap chase at Punchestown, he can now race off 114 here over hurdles. Add in his jockey’s 7lb claim and he looks very well treated. Despite his advancing years he retains plenty of ability over hurdles.

Lord Lariat, who has surprisingly switched stables since a pleasing reappearance at Fairyhouse, rates a live threat. Although that run was over fences, he is equally at home over hurdles and is significantly better handicapped in that code.

Bold Enough, who was the best of these over hurdles, can make a winning chasing debut. A lightly raced young horse, who has made great progress in recent months, he has the added advantage of receiving weight from the previous chase winner in the field. Horses from the de Bromhead yard are always well schooled and Bold Enough also has point-to-point experience to call upon.

Gold Des Bois took time to find his feet over hurdles but got off to a winning start over fences recently. He remains a decent prospect for the season ahead but could just struggle to give the weight away to the de Bromhead runner.

Spancil Hill, who beat a subsequent winner at Clonmel last time, should be able to follow up now. In effect, he is just 1lb higher for that easy win, as his jockey who was unable to claim on that occasion, takes 5lb off his back now. As a previous course-and-distance winner, he will appreciate the tight track, so there is much to recommend him. Paris Texas didn’t jump that well on his return to action earlier in the year but would be dangerous at his best. A consistent type over hurdles earlier in his career, he could benefit from the switch to Padraig Roche.

SELECTION: SPANCIL HILL

Ashroe Diamond, a half-sister to the stable’s smart bumper winner Take Tea, can make a winning debut. Willie Mullins often introduces some of his nice fillies at some of the smaller tracks, so the fact she comes here for her initial run is not a concern. With nothing of note amongst those that have already run, she can get her career off to a winning start.

Game And Glory represents the strongest form of those that have already graced the track. Twice placed from as many runs, Philip Rothwell’s daughter of Fame And Glory does have the significant advantage of previous experience.
