The Gordon Elliott-trained Shajak didn’t set the world alight on his hurdling debut at Killarney in May but he was previously quite a useful operator on the flat for Johnny Murtagh and looks to have a good chance to get off the mark in this sphere. The experience of his last run should stand to him.

Dark Note, representing the in-form Andrew Slattery yard, wasn’t as smart as the selection on the flat but has been running respectably over hurdles and has the advantage of four runs over flights.

In the context of this race for horses who have yet to be placed under rules, a mark of 102 makes The Mass Path a live player. He isn’t overly exposed and has hinted at winning potential for a capable outfit. The application of cheekpieces for the first time could help eke out improvement for a stable with a fine record when trying new headgear.

Bukhill was sent off favourite for bumpers at the Galway Festival and Listowel Harvest Festival when trained by Willie Mullins, and he did show some ability when in fifth and fourth respectively. His recent hurdling debut for Peter Fahey at Punchestown was reasonable without suggesting he is overly progressive. This is a weak race, though, and he has a decent profile for it.

3.10 Kilcawley Construction Irish EBF Mares Handicap Hurdle 2m 1f

Red Ball Of Fire has notched two wins and three placed efforts from six appearances at this track. She comes into this feature race in decent form after a good second at Listowel last month and should be in the thick of things again for Mark McNiff.

This is pretty competitive, though, and the likes of Purse Price, Eve Moneypenny and once-raced We Got This all have solid enough chances. However, the bottom-weight Angelsworknovrtime carries just 10st 1lb when factoring in Aidan Kelly’s 7lb claim and could well bounce back from a Downpatrick effort that wasn’t her best last time.

3.45 Friends Of Brian Mulligan Opportunity Handicap Hurdle 2m 1f

Sharpened up by a spin on the flat at Ballinrobe 13 days ago, Pont Audemer should be in the thick of things for Gavin Cromwell. His best form has come on ground with an ease in it and the more rain that arrives, the better his chance.

Staging Post, a bumper winner at this track for Mark McNiff, ran well here last time over hurdles when second and has the assistance of top conditional Michael O’Sullivan. He makes a little more appeal than Bigz Belief, who disappointed last time on the flat at Limerick but is a capable operator on his day. The Big Chap is another respected rival who needs to overcome a poor showing at Roscommon last month.

4.20 DecoClip Construction Handicap Hurdle 2m 4f

Co Galway-based trainer Shane Ryder was among the winners earlier this week with No Hassle at Tipperary and he could be set to double up with Macs Lady in what looks a weak event. An unexposed Doyen mare who was handed an opening mark of 83 after showing little in maiden hurdles, she ran a big race at 66/1 on her stable/handicap debut at Limerick in May. It was disappointing she didn’t show more on her only start since at Roscommon but her rider said the five-year-old stopped quickly and may have been in season. If able to forgive that run, she rates a strong player in a first-time tongue-tie.

Corkbeg failed to fire last time at Limerick but would be of obvious interest if returning to the sort of form that saw him win two starts ago at Wexford. Cian Quirke’s 7lb claim eases his burden of shouldering top-weight. Bidentime didn’t run badly at Punchestown last time either - his first start since joining Noel Hynds - and also is worthy of inclusion on the shortlist.

4.55 Sligo Park Hotel Handicap Hurdle 3m 1f 88yds

Goodnightngodbless is holding her form well at the age of 10 and has been showing up well over fences lately. Reverting to hurdles off a slightly lower mark now, she is capable of playing a leading role if proving as effective on her first appearance over flights since August 2021 (only her second hurdles run since November 2019).

Iridescent has been well placed and is seeking a hat-trick off a workable mark, Winter Carnival would have a chance if finding confidence back over hurdles (failed to complete on last two chasing starts) and Ballyglass Beauty showed a liking for this track and trip last time when winning off 5lb lower than his current mark.

5.30 Durkin Bros. Electrical INH Flat Race 2m 2f

With Willie and Patrick Mullins dominating bumpers all summer long, it’s difficult to look too far beyond their newcomer Givago. This Doctor Dino five-year-old has a lovely pedigree, being out of a Grade 2/dual Grade 3-winning hurdler in France. It is arguably a little off-putting, though, that he wears a tongue-tie on debut.

Arabian Diamond has probably been running well enough for a bumper like this to fall his way and will be ready to pick up the pieces if the Mullins newcomer isn’t up to scratch. Lake Winnipesaukee has shown a fair deal of ability in the past but was a little frustrating to follow last season. This will be his first start since October so he could be worth a market check.
