Gordon Elliott has won this contest four times in the last six years and given his overall record at this meeting, the French import Fil Dor could prove tough to beat. Second in an AQPS race at Royan La Palmyre, the gelded son of Doctor Dino makes his Irish debut now and surely must be showing something at home given he is the selected juvenile hurdler from Cullentra.

If he flops, Sea Sessions looks best placed to take advantage. Ross O’Sullivan’s filly finished second on her hurdles debut at Punchestown, finding Bell Ex One only half a length too good, with the front three pulling well clear. She can run well.

SELECTION: FIL DOR

This could go the same way as the first, with Gordon Elliott unleashing a potential exciting rectuit in the shape of Punchestown bumper scorer Mighty Potter. Elliott has won this with Ballyadam and Envoi Allen for the past two seasons which suggests Mighty Potter could be useful. He was a smooth winner of his bumper on soft ground last March.

The forecast soft ground may be a negative for Noel Meade’s Luke Shortt and so the second vote goes to Onlyhuman, returning off a near 500-day absence. That may not be a big issue considering he has often run well fresh and he well in his only two hurdles starts to date. Rated 97 on the flat, he has the class to get himself involved today.

SELECTION: MIGHTY POTTER

Gua Du Large could prove himself much better than a mark of 127. The Robcour gelding looked a real horse to follow when winning his Thurles maiden hurdle by 23 lengths last season (admittedly he benefitted from his chief rival falling at the last) and he didn’t disgrace himself in the Grade 2 novice hurdle won by Dreal Deal at Punchestown. His next two starts were a little bit disappointing but his stable wasn’t flying at the time. Freshened up, with a first-time hood and Rachael Blackmore booked, there is enough potential to take a chance with him.

Eskylane could be a more solid option at a potentially shorter price. Fifth in the Champion Bumper two seasons ago, he failed to live up to expectations as a novice hurdler last term but ran really well on his comeback when fourth to Dysart Diamond in a Grade B handicap hurdle. He should be able to build on that now. Yafordadoe is another worth following given his very good recent flat form has seen a 10lb rise in the ratings in that sphere. He could be nicely handicapped over hurdles now off 119.

All eyes will be on Envoi Allen who makes his eagerly awaited return for Henry de Bromhead. The seven-year-old carried all before him going into the spring but fell at Cheltenham and then pulled up after a bad error at Punchestown. His jumping should be tested here with Fairyhill Run and Coko Beach likely to make this a real test over the distance but it would be disappointing if he couldn’t deal with it.

Should Envoi Allen disappoint again, Vado Forte should be the one to take advantage. A recruit from the Tom Lacey yard, this eight-year-old was 15 lengths too good for January Jets on his debut for Gordon Elliott at Limerick. Elliott had him in a handicap chase at Cheltenham last week but elects to come here and that looks a shrewd decision given the small field. If this gelding can improve again, he looks booked for second at the very least.

SELECTION: ENVOI ALLEN

Next best: Vado Forte

Clondaw Secret appeals the only real potential improver in this trappy contest. A six-year-old with just four starts on the track, two over fences, he finished second to The Dabbler at Gowran Park last time and rated a big improvement on his chase debut at Galway.

More improvement is likely and a mark of 118 is fair. Soft ground could also aid him.

Hoke Colborn is coming into a little form and should run well again but a more interesting runner is Envol Pierji, a course-and-distance winner, making his seasonal debut for Liz Doyle. He was able to win on his seasonal debut two years ago so fitness may not be an issue, and though 7lbs higher than his last win here, he has very few miles on the clock.

SELECTION: CLONDAW SECRET

Next best: Envol Pierji

This can go to Gordon Elliott again. He has won the last six renewals of this contest with some star names and American Mike could be another smart recruit. The son of Mahler won a Cork point-to-point by 20 lengths last April and was since bought by Bective Stud for £195,000.

Champ De Gane and Cocoplum both finished second on their racecourse debuts and marginal preference is for the former, whose effort came over this course and distance.
