It might be worth siding with Estepona Sun in this opening maiden hurdle. A dual winner on the flat, including once for Ger Lyons, he shaped well finishing second at Tramore last month which and a reproduction of that effort could be enough to shed his maiden tag, notwithstanding the potential for him to improve further.

Makfils is interesting, making his debut for Henry de Bromhead, but he may be caught out for experience. Complete Fantasy is a safer alternative. He’s been running with credit over hurdles this season, never finishing out of the top five and he has also bumped into a few subsequent winners. Any further rain would aid his cause.

SELECTION: ESTEPONA SUN

Bumper winner Monas Melody has been knocking on the door in two previous maiden hurdles and she can make it third time lucky. She ran well at Cork on her last start when beaten five and a half lengths by The West Awaits, who went on to finish third at Punchestown last week.

That was her first run after a layoff, and Sam Curling has called upon Rachael Blackmore for the ride today. She should be right there.

Manitopark AA has been frustrating to follow, having been sent off even money or less on all four of her Irish starts so far. Her latest run was encouraging and perhaps the better ground might allow her to produce an improved performance. She was a five-time winner on the flat in France, so she has plenty of ability.

The 13lb rise may not be enough to stop Ballyadam Destiny who absolutely romped up at Tramore last month.

The switch back to two and a half miles seemed to bring new life into Terence O’Brien’s seven-year-old, who dominated from the front to score by 16 lengths. Mikey Hamill retains the ride and, if given a lead again, he could be hard to track down.

New Society and Battle Of Benburb were two good winners last month, with the latter slightly preferred today. Gavin Cromwell’s four-year-old has shaped well on his four hurdle runs and is open to plenty of improvement. A reproduction of his last effort will not have him far away.

Arctic Light looks to be back on the right road after returning to winning ways at Limerick last month and he is taken to follow up. The Tom Mullins-trained gelding showed great battling qualities to fend offAdded Bonus and a similar run could be good enough. He seems versatile groundwise and is a winner at two miles and two miles and six furlongs, so today’s trip is no issue.

First Touch had been struggling in hunter chases but has enjoyed a switch to hurdles and was a tenacious winner at Clonmel in March. He ran well at Limerick when third on his latest start and the slight step up in trip should be no issue.

It’s not every week you have a Michael Tabor-owned gelding running in a Cork maiden hurdle, but this might just be the chance Meticulous was waiting for. He ran well behind Dunboyne at Thurles in February, only beaten four lengths with the second, Mercury Lane, going on to win next time out. He might have found the Novice Handicap Hurdle Series Final at Fairyhouse on Easter Sunday a little too hot, and the step back into maiden company should see him home in front.

It might be worth chancing a saver on General Counsel. Pat Fahy’s eight-year-old has had only two career starts, the last one in December 2019, when only beaten a neck in a maiden hurdle by the classy Jason The Militant. He has a huge layoff to overcome but he has plenty of ability, judged on that.

Get Home could be the answer. Her only start over three miles came at Punchestown in January when she was pulled up, but her run over two miles and five furlongs on her latest run in a Limerick handicap hurdle suggests she deserves another crack. She’s a half-sister to three winners who have won at two miles and six furlongs to three miles and, off a mark of 89, she looks competitively handicapped.

Courting Vickie looked to be a little outpaced at Limerick when second behind Rathnaleen Tou and a step up to three miles might do the trick. Her form was boosted when the third that day bolted up at Ballinrobe last Tuesday. .

A huge priced winner on her last start, Ask Dee can follow up her Kilbeggan success. She raced quite freely but made rapid headway before the fourth last to lead from there to the line and score by six lengths. She got an 8lb rise from the handicapper but that seems fair, given the manner of her win.

Of the rest, handicap debutant Ballybeatnik is worth considering. She didn’t show much in maiden hurdles but a switch to handicapping might spark new life. Her pedigree suggests she ought to go close in a contest like this, as she is a half sister to The Storyteller.

A competitive finale might fall the way of Beyond Ambitious. She ran a cracker on debut when just touched off by Rebel Rose at Limerick and can build on that now. She’s a full-sister to the very smart Brain Power and will be right in the mix today for the father-son team of David and Ben Harvey.

Gavin Cromwell’s Manilla Girl is another who shaped promisingly on debut and is sure to be competitive again. She ran well at Tramore and Cromwell has called upon young Joey Dunne, good value for his claim, to take the ride again.
