WILLIAM Haggas could hardly be in better form and took his tally to four at the meeting with another double as soon as day two opened on the Knavesmire on Thursday.
The 2/1 favourite Tasleet landed the DBS Premier Yearling Sales Stakes and Besharah followed up in the Group 2 Lowther for juvenile fillies.
A Kodiac youngster, Besharah (11/4), bred in Co Clare by Gerard Kerin, was winning for the fourth time in six outings and clearly appreciates six furlongs.
Entering the closing stages she still had work to do as Easton Angel tackled 9/4 favourite Lumiere but, as soon as a gap appeared, she was through it in a flash for Pat Cosgrave and quickly pulled two and a half lengths clear of Lumiere, who had entered the race as ante-post favourite for next year’s Qipco 1000 Guineas.
“I think she’s getting better and it suited her to come through a gap,” Cosgrave reported. “Every ride I have for Mr Haggas seems to go well at the minute and I hope it’s not finished yet.”
The trainer, in understandably buoyant mood after such a superb start, admitted he was a little worried with a couple of furlongs to travel.
“I thought it was looking a bit messy at one stage but she picked up and won really well,” he said. “I think it was a good race and this filly has got better over six furlongs. She will go for the Cheveley Park now.”
Haggas again
The DBS sales race was worth £147,000 to the winner and Haggas was winning it or the third year in a row. Tasleet certainly deserved to start favourite after an excellent placed effort behind John Gosden’s Shalaa in the Group Richmond Stakes at Goodwood but he was made to work quite hard here and it was only when Paul Hanagan switched right just over a furlong from home that he went about his business, beating 20/1 chance Ferryover by half a length with Still On Top right behind.
Sales races have a very mixed record when the winners return to Pattern company but this looked a pretty warm affair with many winners in arrears.
