The strong pace put the emphasis on stamina and that clearly suited this big, strong chasing sort. His two best siblings won over three miles and that is clearly his sort of distance. Indeed he would have won both times he’s gone longer than two miles but for tipping up in the lead at Bangor/

My feeling is that My Wigwam Or Yours lacks the acceleration to win against the very best staying novices over hurdles. Next season though he’ll surely be running over fences and it could be a different story.

Pepite Rose (37) powered away from a decent field to win a Newbury handicap chase in fast time.

It was noticeable that jockey Aidan Coleman gave Pepite Rose plenty of room over the jumps but that she still got a bit spooked into over jumping a couple of them. Her trainer Venetia Williams noted that the mare lost confidence in her jumping for a few runs after falling at Newbury last year. She also says she’s not good at jumping fences out of heavy ground.

Toss out the few runs where she lost her confidence and the couple of chase starts where ‘heavy’ appeared in the official going description and you’ll find Pepite Rose has won the other eight times she’s run in single figure fields.

She’s clearly rather useful in single figure fields over fences. She should be able to take a valuable race when she gets the right conditions and could well be able to run a bit faster.
