NOEL Meade enjoyed an industrious time of things with his two-year-olds last season and another good campaign could be in the offing for the trainer’s juveniles after he struck with Elysium in the Foran Equine Irish EBF Fillies Maiden.

From the first crop of Belardo and out of the Chesham Stakes second Sonning Rose, this London Racing Partnership-owned filly made her debut when unplaced in the smart looking Naas maiden won by More Beautiful and she was clearly all the better for that outing.

When Colin Keane brought her off the rail to make her bid, the 12/1 shot picked up in alertly and she forged past Giselles Thunder deep inside the last furlong. At the line she had an ever-increasing one and three-quarter lengths to spare.

“I was a bit disappointed at Naas but nothing went right for her and Gavin Ryan, who rode her that day, said he liked her a lot,” said Meade. “She shows plenty of pace at home so hopefully she’ll go on from here. She handled the little ease in the ground but she has a real daisy cutter action and I’ve always thought that she’d love fast ground.”

Elysium posted a time that was just over a second quicker than Laws Of Indices (3/1) in the following Foran Equine Irish EBF Auction (C&G) Maiden which was run over the same extended five-furlong trip.

Looked green

Ken Condon’s son of Power still looked a little green when Billy Lee brought him out towards the middle of the track to challenge but he became sufficiently attuned to what was required from him to land in front on the line.

The Charlotte Holmes-owned colt, who didn’t run at all badly when ninth to Lucky Vega at Naas earlier this month, finished with a short-head to spare over Street Kid, with the odds-on The Blue Panther a further neck away. Both of the two-year-old winners came out of the Goffs Autumn Yearling Sale where Elysium cost €15,000 and Laws Of Indices was picked up for €8,000.

“I think there will be plenty of winners to come out of the Naas maiden he ran in,” reflected Condon. “He was very raw the first day and was still a bit green there and I think we’ll see the best of him in another run or two.”

Murtagh’s winning streak continues

JOHNNY Murtagh’s string continue to run riot with Lady Maura’s triumph in the three-year-old five-furlong handicap, his 11th in 11 days. Gary Halpin was on board this Maura Gittins-owned filly who cleared away from her toiling rivals over the last furlong and a half for a resounding four-and-three-quarter-length victory over Fool Proof.

The 100/30 favourite was picking up a precious success here as she is a half-sister to the Group 1-winning sprinter Donjuan Triumphant.

“She’s learnt how to sprint and I think we will keep her at this sort of trip for the time being and hopefully she’s one that will progress throughout the season,” declared Murtagh.

A second to the subsequent listed second You’resobeautiful at this track two weeks previously made Illetas the one to beat in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden over five furlongs and he duly justified 5/4 favouritism.

A second winner of the season for apprentice rider Luke McAteer, the three-year-old saw off Limit Long by a length, with I Am Thunder keeping on well to finish a further head back in third.

The victorious son of Power was giving trainer Tony Mullins his first winner of the season and he is owned by Caroline Taylor whose husband Adrian bred the gelding.

Chance winner

Apprentice Paddy Harnett picked up a chance winner on Boughtinthedark (5/1) in the 45-65 rated handicap over an extended five furlongs after the filly’s intended partner Joey Sheridan failed to complete the health screening questionnaire, which made him ineligible to ride at this fixture.

Denis Hogan’s charge was some 16lb higher in the weights from her victory here earlier in the month but she readily dealt with that hike to account for Face Off by three-quarters of a length.

This improving four-year-old, who appeals as one that could well win again, is owned by Michael O’Sullivan.

Joseph O’Brien produces a nice type

HY Brasil belied a starting price of 20/1 to make a winning debut for Joseph O’Brien and Shane Crosse in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden over a mile and five furlongs where he looked a nice staying type for the future.

The strapping Demi O’Byrne-owned son of Fastnet Rock came alive in the straight to defeat the favourite Zanahiyr by a length and a quarer.

Padraig Roche made it two winners in three days on the flat when Walking On Glass easily landed the first division of the 45-70 rated handicap over a mile and five furlongs. The 3/1 chance, who has developed into a reliable dual-purpose performer since springing a surprise here on the flat last May, could afford to be eased down by Leigh Roche late on and still prevail by a length and a quarter.

The Fivers & Tenners Syndicate-owned winner could be set for a productive few months under both codes.

The second division of the staying handicap served up a 25/1 surprise as Lalipour struck for Gordon Elliott and Chris Hayes. This James Power-owned four-year-old hadn’t shown much under either code last year and took his chance off a basement rating of 45.

On his first outing since November, he nailed the favourite, Aasleagh Fawn, in the last strides.
