He has a little trouble going the gallop briefly when the pace increased markedly after a quarter of a mile (to produce a 10.19 second furlong). The further they ran the better he went. In the final furlong he was cruising clear for an easy five-length win.

Super Ale has a rather odd pedigree, being by Elusive City out of a moderate hurdler who is related to a bunch of middle distance horses and jumpers.

He looks and runs like a horse that will be ideally suited by seven furlongs or a mile and is a strong, mature sort.

The normal schedule for a smart Italian two-year-old like this would be next month’s Premio Primi Passi followed by the Prix Robert Papin in July and the Prix Morny a month later. I imagine that’s exactly what he will be doing.

Later on, if things work out, he’d be a logical candidate for the Jean-Luc Lagardere over the short seven furlongs at Longchamp. This is all assuming he doesn’t get snapped up by one of the big stables outside Italy.
