He won the Longines International Stakes, a fiercely competitive seven-furlong handicap, with Galician last year and saw Heavy Metal repeat the dose at 33/1 on Saturday.

The four-year-old won the Richmond Stakes at Goodwood as a youngster but was below-par last term.

This was his fourth win of a successful but very patchy campaign and there were very few supporters last week.

Allowing him to bowl along and hit the front when he was ready, Joe Fanning kept him going to beat Don’t Bother Me by a length with Watchable and Heaven’s Guest best of the rest.

Jessica Harrington’s daughter Kate had an afternoon to remember as Ian Williams’ See The Storm (14/1) landed the Longines Handicap for lady amateurs by a short head from Born To Surprise and Kinglami.

It was a well-judged ride on a horse penalised 6lb for his recent Redcar win but there was not an ounce to spare at the line and it was a long way home after Miss Harrington pushed him into the lead two furlongs out.

It was probably a perfect example of the whip making all the difference but the stewards took a dim view and stood the winning rider down for nine days – not that it dented her enthusiasm.

“I was over the moon to get the ride during the week but I got there far too soon,’’ she exclaimed. She has had 18 winners under both codes in Ireland.

Sea The Storm turned out again at Goodwood on Thursday and won the charity race, ridden by Edie Campbell.

William Haggassaw 10/1 chance Mange All get up close home to beat the luckless American Hope in the mile handicap, while Ryan Moore finally rewarded his supporters as 7/4 favourite Trip To Paris easily took the closing event over a mile and a half.
