PHILIP Enright registered his biggest career win on Thursday’s Thyestes Chase Day as the jockey steered the Mouse Morris-trained Sams Profile (8/1) to win the Grade 2 John Mulhern Galmoy Hurdle.

The meeting was run on testing ground conditions and Sams Profile, in the colours of Michael and John O’Flynn, was reverting from an unsuccessful and sidelined spell over fences.

Held up in rear by Enright, Sams Profile made progress to challenge on the inner in the home straight and in the end battled bravely for a half-length win over Diol Ker.

Morris later revealed: “He fractured ribs at Thurles from a horrible fall and he ran with it afterwards. He bled when he got home after his Fairyhouse run and it was the vets, Siobhan in Halleys, who found it and he also bruised his lungs.

“He is as tough as old boots and it was just one of those things in Thurles but it got too late in the year (to continue novice chasing). The Stayers’ Hurdle will be pencilled in now.”

Dreaper win

Unusually, given the prestigious nature of the day, all seven of the races were won by different trainers (and none by champion trainer Willie Mullins) with Forrard Away being an appropriate winner of the opening Langtons Kilkenny Handicap Hurdle for owner/breeder Peter Newell at 7/2 favourite.

Forrard Away, under jockey Keith Donoghue, was gaining a second career win for trainer Jim Dreaper, whose family is forever linked with Thyestes Chase day due to famous wins in the race with Arkle and Flyingbolt.

The trainer’s son Thomas Dreaper said: “He was going to run in a beginners’ chase this weekend but we decided to come here and he’ll jump a fence now.

“We haven’t tried him on faster ground and I doubt we’ll ask him for the foreseeable future. He’ll be next year’s horse.”

Foley on the mark with Rebel

Gold

LOCAL Tom Foley, trainer of the people’s champion Danoli, was also on the mark at the meeting as his Rebel Gold (4/1) landed the Daly Farrell Accountants Beginners Chase, for jockey Paddy Kennedy and owners Stanley/O’Down/Nolan/Kennedy.

Foley’s son Pat reported: “He is a fantastic jumper and the Shamrock Handicap Chase back here in March will probably be his next race. Dad is in good spirits and that’ll be a good tonic for him and keep him happy.”

Rookie trainer John Flavin has made an excellent start to his new career and sent out his second winner with Street Value (2/1), under Barry John Foley for the Miracle Cure Syndicate, in the Adare Opportunity Handicap Hurdle.

Street Value was Tramore-based Flavin’s first winner at Clonmel nine days ago and following today’s win, Flavin quipped: “That’s my third runner as a trainer – I had one earlier, but shouldn’t have bothered bringing him at all!”

The race also featured Charles Byrnes’ easy-to-back Pairc Na Ngael (6/4 - 15/8 favourite), who pulled up.

O’Neill on Song with her first series win

THE Red Mills EBF Ladies Auction Maiden Hurdle saw just three of the nine runners complete, with Song Of Earth (11/2) eventually scoring a head win for trainer Mags Mullins, jockey Lisa O’Neill and owners K. Leavy, M.P. Hackett, A. Hanway, and Ms M. Mullins.

Cheltenham Festival-winning jockey O’Neill commented: “That’s my first winner in this Ladies Series so it is nice to finally get one on the board.

“He did it all well himself and battled well to the line. I’m delighted for Mags to get a winner at her local track. It’s tough work out there but he had the most experience in the race and that stood to him.”

The concluding P.J. Foley Memorial Bumper was won in impressive style by the Gavin Cromwell-trained newcomer Perceval Legallois (12/1), under Derek O’Connor, with well-touted debutant and 4/11 favourite Hara Kiri managing just third.

Cromwell stated: “Obviously we were very afraid of Willie’s (Hara Kiri) horse but I’m not one bit surprised because he has shown us plenty at home,.

“My wife Kiva along with the breeder have half-shares and they sent him over from France. I won a bumper with his half-brother (Wavelength). He’ll be for sale.”
