BLACK Magic Woman continues to do young trainer Jack Davison proud and the useful three-year-old took her form to a new high as she bagged the Tote Supporting Irish Racing Since 1930 Race.

This filly gave the trainer his first winner last year and she landed a gamble at Gowran Park earlier this month but this was her best performance to date. Of the seven runners, four of them held ratings in excess of 95 which made this a stiff enough test for Gary Halpin’s mount.

However, the 7/2 chance was more than equal to the task and settled this race heading towards the last furlong to win by a length and three-quarters.

“I thought that she’d be hard to beat off her win the last time and the little bit of rain that fell helped her as well,” reported the trainer. “I’ve one eye on the fillies’ premier handicap on Derby weekend and she does have an entry in the Group 3 Brownstown Stakes back here next month. Hopefully she keeps progressing.”

O’Dwyer’s first winner

It was an evening to live long in the memory for young apprentice Charlie O’Dwyer, the son of the dual Gold Cup and Champion Hurdle-winning jockey Conor O’Dwyer, as he partnered his first winner on Roses Queen (12/1) in the second division of the La Bucca Restaurants Handicap.

To make the victory even more special Roses Queen is trained by the jockey’s father and owned by his mother, Audrey. O’Dwyer (16) is currently in the middle of his Junior Certificate exams and this was his 12th ride.

Appropriately, this success came at the track where the rider’s father partnered the final winner of his career on Mister Top Notch in March 2008.

Swelltime, who was as big as 40/1 earlier in the day before being returned at 8/1, pulled off a gamble for Joe Murphy in the first division of the 45-65 mile and a half handicap.

Adam Farragher made the running on the Born To Sea gelding who battled on gamely in the straight to hold Pearl Warrior and Walkabout. The Murphy-owned three-year-old was making just the fifth appearance of his career.

Quick double for Coakley

TRACEY Collins has a nice type on her hands in Independent Missy who followed up a debut second at the Curragh last month, with a clear-cut success in the Tote-sponsored seven-furlong maiden.

Ross Coakley’s mount quickened up well entering the last furlong to surge clear, defeating the pace-setting favourite Limit Long by four lengths. The Thomas Rogers-owned daughter of Dandy Man can hold up well through the season.

Ross Coakley then made it a double aboard the John Oxx-trained She’s My Dream (16/1) in the Tote-sponsored three-year-old six-furlong handicap. The grey slipped clear of the field early in the straight and she kept the closers at bay over the last furlong.

The daughter of Zebedee, who had been placed on four occasions in the past, is owned by Tom Monaghan.

Jake Peter strikes again

THE ultra-reliable Jake Peter (11/10) embellished his already impressive record over the last 10 months with an easy six-length triumph in the Tote-sponsored mile and a half handicap. The Frank McNulty-owned and bred five-year-old has finished no worse than third on his last 11 outings under both codes and this was his fifth win during that time. Pat Flynn’s charge cruised by Ingenuity to lead well over a furlong from home and from this point on Ben Coen’s mount had victory in safe keeping.

The Donal Kinsella stalwart Ducky Mallon (20/1) took his career tally to eight wins from 54 career starts in the Sign Up For A Tote Account Handicap over seven furlongs.

Now a winner in five of the six seasons that he has raced, the Kinsella-owned and bred gelding turned out fresh and well on his first run since December.

It looked as though Make A Challenge might have slipped the field early in the straight but Robbie Colgan exuded the utmost confidence in the strong-travelling grey who gradually reeled in the leader before hitting the line half a length clear of a slew of strong finishers.

Ross O’Sullivan sent out his first two-year-old winner as the 33/1 shot Dolce Sicily produced much her best effort to date to land the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden. Two runs over five furlongs stood to this Epaulette filly who made all the running for Declan McDonogh and bravely held off the persistent effort of Never Before by a neck.

The 10,000gns purchase is owned by the Smoke And Mirrors Partnership.

Suspension for Hoban

CONOR Hoban picked up a one-day careless riding ban in the two-year-old maiden. Joey Sheridan became the fourth jockey this season to be sent on to the IHRB Referrals Committee after contravening the new whip rules for the fourth time.
