JOSEPH O’Brien continued his hot winning streak in June making it 15 winners in the space of a fortnight when sending out Cava and Waitingfortheday for a 72/1 plus double.

Cava was an unconsidered 20/1 chance on her debut in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden but the daughter of Acclamation showed few signs of inexperience by leading a furlong out and staying on well to beat My Laureate half a length. The homebred filly is owned in partnership by Harry and Hamish McCalmont, and winning rider Seamie Heffernan commented: “She’s smart and she’s a two-year-old type. She was professional and straightforward.”

Waitingfortheday was a much stronger fancy for the Summer Family Fun Day July 8th Handicap having won cosily at Leopardstown the previous week and duly obliged in the colours of John Dollard.

The 5/2 favourite was ridden by Joseph’s brother Donnacha and she was sent on over a furlong out to beat It’s All A Joke by half a length.

“She’s a grand little filly. She broke smart, travelled well and is very uncomplicated. She was value for the winning margin the last day and it’s nice to get another win into her,” said the winning rider.

GREAT SUPPORTERS

Donnacha O’Brien was fancied to follow up in the featured Toals.com Bookmakers Fillies Race aboard Most Gifted but the Ballydoyle-trained 2/5 favourite found little under pressure in this four-runner event.

Surrounding switched left to challenge a furlong out by Conor Hoban, and the 11/4 chance quickened up well to beat Gasta by two lengths.

“It was a lovely race for her taking on fillies only. Obviously when there is an odds-on shot you are never confident but it was an ideal opportunity to drop her in,” said trainer Michael Halford, who added: “We had a tongue-tie on her for the first time. I’m not sure if it made any difference to her but we felt that she might benefit from it.

“The Newell family are local and are great supporters of ours.

“They get a great kick out of it. If we could get her some blacktype that would be the ultimate aim for her.”

Odds-on punters had better fortune in the Fairyhouse For Club Fundraisers Maiden where Loving A Boom ended a sequence of placed efforts with a convincing success. The 4/7 shot made virtually all under Declan McDonogh, and was in control from over a furlong out to beat National Glory by three lengths.

“He was entitled to win it on his few runs and he appreciated a bit of nicer ground. Chris (Hayes) said he just didn’t get home over a bit longer at Sligo the last day. I had him about three weeks before he ran in Sligo,” said Gordon Elliott, who trains the gelding for the Arion Racing Club.

MONTY ROBERTS BLANKET

Total Demolition often blows his chance at the start but recorded a seventh career win when coming home strongly from off the pace in the Toals.com Bookmakers Handicap. The 8/1 chance, trained by John Larkin for Breen White, kept on well inside the final furlong for Ross Coakley to beat Scoil Naisiunta by a length and three quarters.

“When he gets it right he gets it right. Ross’s father kindly gave me a loan of a Monty Roberts starting stall blanket and he came out a little bit quicker,” said Larkin.

“I suppose the ground and the trip were a factor too. Every time we went to run him last year the ground went very heavy. We have Galway in mind again and he has options there now over a mile or a mile and a half. I wish I had a few more like him.”

Schoolboy Error (7/4 favourite) justified strong support in the Follow Fairyhouse On Social Media Handicap, although the fast-diminishing head defeat of Match My Fire was only confirmed after a stewards’ enquiry. The Shane Nolan-trained gelding drifted left, despite Chris Hayes riding with his whip in his left hand, edging across Creative Talent (third) inside the final furlong who in turn hampered Match My Fire.

Hayes said: “I got there sooner than ideal. He ran the other day (in Roscommon) and he was very fresh. It was his first run after a break, and that knocked the edge off him.”

PATIENT

Waitaki benefitted from a patient ride by Danny Sheehy to land the La Bucca Restaurants Handicap. Trained locally by Dermot McLoughlin for David Eiffe, the Invincible Spirit mare took a keen hold in rear early and was switched out wide for a clear run in the straight.

The well-backed 10/1 (from 14/1) chance came home strongly on the stands’ side leading well inside the final furlong to beat Coreczka by three-quarters of a length.

Horse To Follow

CALDBECK (G. Elliott): Took a while to get going on his debut before the penny really started to drop in the closing stages and he should progress well from this experience.
