DENIS Hogan and Brian Cawley stole the show at Kilbeggan’s final meeting of 2014, combining for a double, as Brian O’Connell also made his mark with two winners.

Hogan and Cawley were quickly into their stride with Mysticaltou in the opening Kilbeggan Maiden Hurdle. Owners, the Treanrevagh Racing Syndicate, of which breeder Gerry Neary is a part, can only have been thrilled to see their five-year-old Shantou mare make a winning debut at odds of 66/1.

Cawley wore the same silks as were carried to victory by Mystical City in the Galway Hurdle back in 1996. Mysticaltou is a granddaughter of that nine-time scorer.

The outsider came through from off the pace, like a horse that we’ll be hearing a lot more about, to eventually beat Tiger Trek by a length and three quarters.

“I didn’t really know that much about her as I don’t have her that long. She’s awful free at home and Brian gave her a good ride and got her settled. We can drive on and find a winners of one or something now,” said Hogan.

The 535/1 double was completed with Dedoctorsdaughter’s triumph in the Bloomfields House Hotel Handicap Chase.

It was difficult to argue with Hogan’s post-race assessment. “Brian’s very good value for his 51Ib claim. He put Dedoctorsdaughter to sleep out the back and got her to creep into the race,” summation after the Wildcats Syndicate-owned 7/1 shot, comfortably defeated favourite Kanesh by seven and a half lengths.

Now possibly Listowel-bound, Dedoctorsdaughter was bouncing back from a disappointment at Downpatrick on her previous outing when pulling up in a hurdle. She was reportedly “mad in season” on that occasion. Brian O’Connell’s two winners came in at combined odds of nearly 40/1.

After Mysticaltou and Dedoctorsdaughter, Lilly The Lioness (9/1 into 8/1) was another mare to upstage the geldings in the Pavexpress Handicap Hurdle.

In the colours of owner/breeder Pat McCarthy, O’Connell was never far from the pace on Lilly The Lioness and she could be picked out as a likely winner from some way out in this two miler.

Garrett Power’s charge eventually came home a convincing five lengths to the good from Cristy’s Call.

O’Connell complimented Lilly The Lioness’ durability in the aftermath and the daughter of Welsh Lion has now won over hurdles, fences and on the flat in little more than the past couple of months.

Having impressed point-to-point followers when landing a Lingstown maiden in November 2012, Desertmore Stream (7/2) proved to be more than a touch disappointing initially under rules.

He’s turned the corner now, and in some style, a point he emphasised when capturing the Kilbeggan Patrons Club Hurdle under O’Connell.

Not surprisingly a terrible blunder two out “put the heart crossways” in successful trainer Philip Fenton.

However, it was only temporary anxiety as O’Connell’s mount had enough in the tank to recover and cross the line six lengths in front of the well-backed market-leader, Golden Wonder.

Having now displayed his staying power in this extended three-miler, the Gigginstown House Stud-owned six-year-old has options with Fenton remarking: “He’s been kept busy and is still a novice until the start of October. He could go to Listowel, and I’d imagine he’ll go chasing next season.”

For the fourth time in five years Dessie Hughes got the accolade for leading trainer at the track. The Osborne Lodge maestro was on the score-sheet during this session too courtesy of Swiftmarc’s win in the Martinstown Opportunity Handicap Hurdle.

This veteran In The Wings gelding had a minor wind operation since his previous start in early June. The Corlican Syndicate’s 14/1 shot’s short-head win here over the luckless War Of The Pennys, marked a significant milestone for his jockey Ian McCarthy. The Galway man has now lost his 3Ib claim.

In the other race over obstacles on the card, the Midland Breeders Supporting Kilbeggan Beginners Chase, Noel Meade turned to an old ally in Denis O’Regan, for the ride on Mrs Patricia Hunt’s heavily-backed odds-on chance, Silver Tassie.

Tu Va stable number one, Paul Carberry is still not recovered from a collarbone injury, and his deputy, Davy Condon is sidelined with fractured vertebrae.

O’Regan was smooth as you like on fencing first-timer Silver Tassie. He could afford a slight mistake at the last and still beat Tisamystery by 24 lengths.

Viewed as a stayer by Meade, Silver Tassie will be seen at Listowel if there’s a suitable race for him while he’s not finished with hurdles yet either. His trainer thinks there could be a good handicap in him in that sphere.

Holidaying in America at present, Tara Cogan has care of Oiche Maith for her mother Monica. They employed the services of Damian Skehan for the ride on the previous course and distance third-placer in the Athlone INH Flat Race.

When second favourite Notorious Villain ran out when in front after about a mile, Oiche Maith (7/1 from 8s) took over and made the rest on the way to an easy 20-length verdict over The Rite Article.

This was a first win on the racecourse for Moone-based Cogan, since Schindler’s Pearl registered two victories in the summer of 2009.
