CUSTOM Cut completed a hat-trick for David O’Meara when making a successful raid from Malton in north Yorkshire to land the Group 3 Invesco Pension Consultants Desmond Stakes.

The gelded son of Notnowcato, previously a real flag-bearer for George Kent, winning five times culminating in the Gladness Stakes at the Curragh last spring, has really struck form for O’Meara in recent weeks and, following listed victories at Windsor and Pontefract, put up a dominant performance in this €62,500 event.

Danny Tudhope, partnering his first Irish winner, got the 100/30 chance to the front at the furlong pole and he stayed on really strongly to beat Brendan Brackan by two and a quarter lengths with Sruthan in third.

Tudhope said: “He’s a real trier and a tough horse. I was told to have him handy but they were going too quick. He really picked up in the straight and is a lovely genuine type.”

Pat Breslin, who owns the winner in partnership with Gary Douglas, said: “I’m from Manchester and support United, and Gary is a big Rotherham United fan so hence the red and white colours. We have been involved in a few syndicates but this is by far the best horse we’ve had.

“He’s in the Strensall Stakes at York next week but that may come a bit too soon. The main plan is the Group 2 Park Stakes at Doncaster.”

The Oyster Stakes at Galway next month could be next on the agenda for Massinga after the Aga Khan homebred justified odds of 8/11 in the nine-furlong Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Handicap.

The daughter of Selkirk needed to be driven along by Pat Smullen but got on top inside the final furlong to beat Sea Coast by three-quarters of a length. “It was a good, workmanlike performance and a good, strong ride by Pat,” said Dermot Weld. “I decided to drop her in trip to teach her and sharpen her up. We’ll be looking for blacktype with her now and the Oyster Stakes is most likely as it’s a fillies’ only race now.”

There was a terrific finish to the opening juvenile Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden and the Johnny Murtagh-trained Puck Fair (9/4) had her head down at just the right time to get the better of a protracted battle with Vitalized by a nose. Winning rider Niall McCullagh, sporting the red colours of Anthony Rogers, said: “They went a good gallop and the softer ground helped. I’d say she will probably stay over six furlongs for the time being.”

Ado McGuinness is looking at Irish Champions Weekend as he plans to “go for one of the big handicaps” with Oor Jock after the gallant six-year-old scored for the third time this season in the six-furlong ‘Charlatans’ Handicap.

The 8/1 chance headed the front-running Chillie Billie inside the final furlong to score by two lengths and McGuinness said: “He could go for the Joe McGrath Handicap and the six-furlong race at the Curragh on Irish Champions Weekend. He’s always a bit slowly away but that might have been a blessing in disguise as they went quick up front.

“He used to get very upset in the stables but now we leave him in the box with his pony and he’s grand.”

The absence of Ballydoyle pair Ol’ Man River and Smuggler’s Cove from the Irish Stallion Farms EBF (C & G) Maiden due to the soft ground meant Joseph O’Brien switched onto Order Of St George and he readily justified odds of 2/5. The mile event was quickly over as a contest early in the straight as the Galileo colt stretched clear, eventually scoring by a facile eight and a half lengths.

“He’d a nice run first time out but I was surprised how green he was next time at Naas where the penny didn’t drop until the last 100 yards. Back over a mile suited him and he’s a big, immature horse,” said Joseph O’Brien.

Supposing got off the mark at the fourth attempt in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden, with the David Wachman-trained filly leading over a furlong out and staying on well inside the final furlong for Wayne Lordan to beat Spirited by a length and a half. “She had the form, travelled well and it’s nice to get her head in front. She’s a very straight forward filly.”

A trip near home to the upcoming Bellewstown August meeting is next on the cards for Sweet Cherry after losing her maiden tag in the Bulmers Original Summer Music Night Apprentice Handicap. Tom ‘Socks’ Madden produced the Mastercraftsman filly on the outer in the straight, and she kept on best to beat Solar Focus by a length and a half. Eamon Delany trains the 4/1 winner for his son Alan as well as Patrick Fullam and Denis Burke.
