ABBEY Magic gained an invaluable Grade B win at Cork on Sunday where the Henry de Bromhead-trained mare landed the blacktype €40,000 coopsuperstores.ie Handicap Chase under jockey Rachael Blackmore.

The daughter of Beneficial completed a hat-trick of consecutive wins in 2018 for De Bromhead and Blackmore and was then absent for almost two years before her return to action at Kilbeggan in September.

Here Abbey Magic raced prominently throughout and in the end responded well for pressure in scoring a one and three-quarter lengths win over Lakemilan as 3/1 favourite.

De Bromhead wasn’t present and Blackmore later said: “The owners (Halley family) have had to be patient as she had a setback so it is great to get her back in the winners’ enclosure again.

“She is very honest and she is very good to jump.”

Winning hat-trick

The John McConnell-trained Streets Of Doyen himself completed a hat-trick of wins in the INH Stallion Owners EBF Novice Hurdle, under jockey Simon Torrens for Caroline Ahearn as 6/4 favourite.

McConnell explained: “He has learned how to race now but doesn’t do much unless he is asked.

“You could see coming up to the line he wasn’t doing a whole lot in front either. He has a big engine and is exciting and likes good ground so I might put him away. He could be a Pertemps (Final) type horse in time and there’s also the three-mile handicap at Fairyhouse in Easter too. Not too many win three in a row. Simon is riding unbelievably and is worth his 5lb claim all day long so I’m using him a good bit.”

Streets Of Doyen’s win was gained at the expense of Mouse Morris’ Friary Rock who fell at the final flight when disputing the lead under jockey Philip Enright.

However, Morris and Enright did leave with a winner later in the card as Foxy Jacks easily won the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Beginners Chase for D. F. Desmond as 8/11 favourite.

Foxy Jacks won unextended by eight lengths from Coral Blue and afterwards Enright said: “He jumped great all the way today and made up for being unseated the last day at Limerick. On form you were hoping he would do that, and thankfully he did.”

Genuine Fest Deiz goes in again
for Purcell

RACING began with the Red Mills Irish EBF Auction Maiden Hurdle which was won by the Kieran Purcell-owned and trained Fest Deiz, with Donagh Meyler on board at 15/8 favourite.

Purcell commented: “He deserved it and is a grand little horse and is genuine. He’ll give you the same every day he goes out and he needs good ground. It was beautiful ground and we’ll see how the handicapper rates him now.”

Big-priced winner

Biggest priced winner on the day was, unusually, supplied by trainer Gordon Elliott as his Elite Trooper Grey landed the Mallow Handicap Hurdle for jockey Kevin Sexton at 18/1.

The former flat performer was making his handicap hurdle debut and beat more experienced rivals when scoring a four-length win over Smithscorner for owner Francis Mangan.

Gearoid O’Loughlin’s Whatsyourstatus made use of his 19lb lower hurdles rating than fences mark when winning the Thank You To The Frontline Handicap Hurdle under Sean Flanagan.

O’Loughlin, also the winning owner, commented: “That’s him for the season and the plan would be to put him away for a nice chase and maybe the Ulster National at Downpatrick.

“He jumps fences better than a lot and is very quick over a fence. I thought today was a good opportunity and I doubt after today, his ground will still be there.”

Long-tem value

The Diary Keeper enhanced her longterm value with a first win over jumps as the Sean Aherne-trained, Sheila Ahern-owned mare landed the Fermoy Handicap Hurdle under Gavin Brouder going off at 8/1.

Aherne said: “She won a bumper in Killarney a few years ago and it took her a while to get the knack of hurdling and to relax. She relaxed and hurdled today and it gave her a chance.

“She has her bumper and hurdle won now so will make a broodmare in time. She’s not finished racing yet though. That’s Gavin’s first winner for me.”

On Eagles Wings (3\1) brought up another bumper win, the Cork (Pro/Am) INH Flat Race, for the Hyde family with Daniel on board for his grandfather trainer Timmy Hyde, the gelding having won a bumper at Limerick back in March.

Half a dozen lengths was the winning margin over Mahlers Dollar second with Torygraph another two and a quarter lengths back in third.
