WILLIAM Haggas has enjoyed a sustained run of success in the second half of the season and his Iffraaj filly Muffri’ha signed off in style in the Group 3 Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff Awards Darley Stakes over nine furlongs.
Clearly very tough, she was coming on from a handicap success the previous week and buckled down well to hold Cambridgeshire runner-up Carry On Deryck by a length and a half, with O’Brien’s Johannes Vermeer well held in third.
“She loves fast ground and really picked up for Pat Cosgrave today but she’ll be retired now,’’ Haggas reported. By contrast, Johannes Vermeer is expected to come on again at four and remains in training.
Mick Channon has shaken off serious illness in the fairly recent past and goes on sending out winners all around the country, even though influential owners sometimes move on.
KASSIA TOUGHS IT OUT
Channon’s Kassia is holding her form well and liked everything about the opening Listed visionsport.com Boadicea Fillies’ Stakes over six furlongs.
Battling on bravely, she just denied Haggas’s Gravity Flow by a head with Mise En Rose in third.
The runner-up, successful in all four races this term, was clear overall leader at one stage. However, Kassia (15/2) and Graham Lee followed her through and just had the better of things on the climb to the line.
“I told Graham to ride her like a good thing because we think she is,’’ the trainer said. “Next year she could make up into a group filly.’’
It took Jim Crowley a while to shake off defending champion Silvestre de Sousa but he is a hard-working, thoroughly deserving professional and the title is his now.
Every winner now comes as a sort of celebration and Timmy Murphy, another to switch codes, was quick to congratulate him after 11/1 chance Island Vision had beaten Murphy’s mount Flying North by a length in the Dubai Business Information Fillies’ Nursery over seven furlongs.
The winner appreciated the extra furlong after a fair fourth at Doncaster and was continuing trainer David Simcock’s good run. He will look for one more opportunity with her before retirement.
John Gosden saddled the first two home in the Listed Godolphin Flying Start Zetland Stakes and the form may work out very well indeed.
Ten furlongs is a long way for two-year-olds to travel and 3/1 favourite Coronet, making her way up the outside for Frankie Dettori, proved a neck too good for stable-companion Cunco, a son of Frankel.
A Dubawi grey, Coronet was coming on from a seemingly modest Leicester maiden but she is out of Approach and is therefore a half-sister to St Leger runner-up Midas Touch.
It is unusual for Gosden to let fillies take on colts and the 20/1 on offer for the Oaks may turn out to be quite generous. The Musidora is the obvious stepping-stone.
