REST OF CARD
THE Group 2 Duke of York Clipper Logistics Stakes went to Charlie Hills’ Magical Memory, who was heavily backed and started at 5/2 favourite.
Tracking the leaders, Dettori brought him with a strong challenge approaching the final furlong and prevailed by half a length from Suedois, who ran a blinder on this second outing for David O’Meara.
Danzeno and Eastern Impact came next, ahead of Henry Candy’s Tropical Son, who possibly found his Group 1 penalty counting against him on his reappearance.
Low numbers seemed favoured in the previous sprint handicap and Magical Memory was well berthed in four. Tropical Son might have fared better if coming across from the number 11 stall but he will no doubt have his chance of revenge if the ground is on the good side for the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot.
“I think we’ve got to go for it as well,” Hills said. “What impresses you about this horse is the way he travels in his races. I think the Diamond Jubilee is on for us, though he could just as easily drop back to five furlongs.
“Frankie rang me up last weekend and said Magical Memory is tailor-made for Santa Anita (the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint), so let’s hope he’s right.”
Suedois arrived at O’Meara’s yard from France. He has been gelded and finished runner-up in a listed event on his debut in this country. He looks an exciting prospect and should be followed from now on, with the Diamond Jubilee included in the list of targets.
Dettori completed his treble when Gosden’s Kyllachy colt Castle Harbour, 9/2 favourite, came through smoothly to land the multi-runner Conundrum HR Consulting Stakes, a multi-runner handicap over seven furlongs.
There were any number of ‘dark’ contenders and recent winners but Castle Harbour comfortably accounted for Chief Whip and Monteverdi.
“He didn’t race at two and I shan’t try to get another run into him to get him qualified for the Britannia, but I’d have no hesitation in pointing him at the Jersey Stakes,” Gosden said.
The bookmakers started the day well enough when the widely touted Spanish Squeeze could not continue Hugo Palmer’s good run in the 888sport Stakes, a handicap over the Musidora distance.
Victory went to Richard Hannon’s 12/1 chance Nayel, who was being pushed along by young Tom Marquand early in the straight but kept finding more and proved half a length too good for gallant top-weight Pacify with Erik The Red third.
See The Sun, 9/1, is not the most consistent sprinter in training but Tim Easterby has him in excellent fettle at present and the five-year-old was always well to the fore before taking the Infinity Tyres Handicap from Mythmaker and Red Pike. More good handicaps beckon.
With the unruly Hemingway withdrawn, Godolphin youngster Kananee defied his penalty in the two-year-old novice event but those playing at 5/4 may have been a shade fortunate because Karl Burke’s runner-up Medici Banchiere wandered all over the track before going down by a head at 33/1.
Roger Varian’s 5/1 chance Appeared took the closing Constant Security Handicao over a mile and a half quite comfortably under Andrew Atzeni.
Even all of Ryan Moore’s considerable determination could not galvanise the disappointing maiden Muhaafiz, who was nicely handicapped but dropped right out.
