This seemingly impossible ‘consolation’ puzzle will provide some sort of guide to the effect of the draw in the same sponsors’ Stewards’ Cup later on. From stall 17 Ryan Moore may well be able to follow the pace on Richard Fahey’s Tatlisu, whose form over the past few weeks reads very well. Stewards’ Cup favourite Muthmir was probably a little rusty when Tatlisu beat him at Newcastle but that was still a very good effort, as was the narrow defeat by Blaine in a £20,000 race at Hamilton. There is rather a lot of five-furlong form to hand but solid efforts over six count for more. Fahey also runs El Viento, who has slipped to a handy mark, with Stepping Out and the penalised Extrasolar also taking the eye.

Goodwood is never short of tricky handicaps and this is a cracker.

Many will look first at Sir Michael Stoute’s Kings Fete, who is lightly raced and won like a progressive horse at York. A 5lb increase does not seem prohibitive and he is one for the short list. If the ground stays on the fast side, top-weight Double Bluff also has a leading chance, having given Ebor favourite Pallasator a run for his money at Ascot. As always, however, it is important to look at Mark Johnston’s other runners. Rainbow Rock came from a long way off the pace when second on Thursday and again has the services of Cam Hardie, while the canny handler has booked William Buick for Master Of Finance, who might have opted for the easier finale yesterday. Master Of Finance’s foreign exploits were preceded by an excellent effort at Musselburgh, where he found only Hesketh Bank too good.

Satellite and Second Step also look well up to the task.

John Gosden’s fillies have been running so well that both Sultanina and Eastern Belle warrant close consideration, with preference for the former, though her winning experience is all on softer ground.

With Thistle Bird missing the race and Narniyn also needing the rain, it may pay to side with Aidan O’Brien’s Venus De Milo, who was no match for Thistle Bird at the Curragh but battled on well and has plenty of experience on firm going. This is by no means the strongest Nassau of recent years and the progressive Mango Diva also enters the argument.

The annual cavalry charge looks as competitive as ever, though many were greatly taken by Muthmir’s smooth success at York last week and expect him to defy a 6lb penalty. That is invariably harder than it appears but he must have a good chance. Stable-companion Rex Imperator is only 4lb higher than when winning last year and has been keeping good company, while Hallelujah is running into form and Blaine won well at Hamilton. There is also a case to be made for last year’s consolation winner Seeking Magic but, like many of these, he was behind fourth-placed Alben Star in the Wokingham. Although the weights have been adjusted, Fahey can now call on George Challoner’s 3lb claim and that can be vital in these races. The six-year-old was a very good fifth two years ago. Intrinsic is a much-improved sprinter and appeals most of the rest.

5.35 SEAMUS BUCKLEY’S 20th GLORIOUS STAKES 5f

This course might almost have been designed for Peterkin, who is very fast but only just gets home. A very intricate finale sees Money Team and Angel Flores ready to pounce late but, if the weather holds, Peterkin may lead all the way.

With Jeremy Noseda’s team hitting form the one to beat may be Outback Traveller, if a below-par effort last time is forgiven. Even so, the choice is just Red Pike, who is 3lb better in with him for a narrow defeat over course and distance in June. Bryan Smart’s horse holds his form well and has had a good rest.

2.55 CHEVELEY PARK STUD FILLIES’ NURSERY 6f

This is just about the hottest nursery of the season so far and Robert Eddery holds very good cards with East Coast Lady and Feeling Easy. The former was a tidy winner over course and distance last time and must surely go close but Feeling Easy won well at Newbury and Yarmouth and, interestingly, Eddery has booked young Kieran Shoemark, who looked excellent value for his 7lb claim when winning the apprentices’ handicap at Goodwood on Thursday.
