Abashiri: Faced a big ask at Newmarket on her second career start, having won impressively on debut in November. Ran a fine race in fifth, beaten four lengths, despite showing signs of inexperience and will also improve fitness-wise.
America Queen: Lowther runner-up and Cheveley Park Stakes fourth (didn’t get the clearest run) showed she retained plenty of ability when headed close home in the Nell Gwynn Stakes. Both dam and sire were sprinters, so stamina is a worry.
Beautify: Third in the Ballydoyle jockey bookings and disappointed on reappearance when eighth in the Nell Gwynn. No forlorn hope though, given that she won a Group 2 and finished second in the Moyglare Stud Stakes last year.
Black Caviar Gold: Group 3-winning juvenile disappointed in the Priory Belle Stakes (lost a shoe) but bounced back to finish second in the Athasi Stakes over course and distance. Still needs to improve to trouble the top two.
Hope Queen: Made it two from two last July when winning a listed contest that has worked out quite well. This is a huge step up in class, though, and she’s been off the track for 10 months.
Kensington Lane: Earned her place here when winning the Athasi Stakes – her first start over a mile. Like the runner-up, she needs to progress again to figure in the first three.
Magny Cours: It would be incredible if Danny McLoughlin could win this so early in his career and with a maiden, too, as Magny Cours was disqualified after winning on debut. She earned her place with a second to True Love last time, but it’s difficult to see her winning. That said, she offers each-way value.
Pivotal Attack: Trainer finished third last year with 20/1 shot Cercene, who went on to win the Coronation Stakes. This filly has a similar rating and had a similar prep run, coming wide to finish third behind True Love. That was her first start of the season and she is expected to progress.
Precise: Top-class juvenile was sent off favourite at Newmarket, where Ryan Moore eased a furlong out when her chance was gone. Will come on from that but still has something to prove and plenty of faith is needed to support her at such a short price.
Sinmara: Once-raced as a juvenile, the well-bred Kingman filly impressed in a Gowran Park maiden on her seasonal return. Fourth next time out in the Athasi Stakes behind two of today’s rivals, leaving her with plenty to find here.
Sukanya: Blacktype two-year-old returned to win the Fred Darling Stakes and the runner-up subsequently finished sixth in the 1000 Guineas. By Havana Grey but her full-sister won twice over 10 furlongs, so the trip isn’t a wory.
True Love: Cheveley Park Stakes heroine is two from two this season, following up her commanding Group 3 success under a penalty at Leopardstown to win the Newmarket classic under Wayne Lordan. Ryan Moore takes over here and it’s difficult to find a negative in her profile.
Conclusion:
True Love would have been my pick based on her Leopardstown performance and only enhanced her appeal when winning at Newmarket. Her three closest rivals have stayed away today and the fifth horse, Abashiri, looks the best value rival here, as I see Precise’s current price to be based on her two-year-old promise and the regard in which connections hold her.
They are the obvious three choices, but Pivotal Attack could be an outsider worth considering as a value each-way bet. She has a similar profile to Joe Murphy’s 2025 third Cercene and will come on from her promising reappearance in a Group 3 trial won by True Love.
