1.50 MARTIN REILLY BMW MAIDEN HURDLE 2M 80Y
Tree Of Knowledge was sent off a well-supported 7/4 favourite for his maiden hurdle at Cork last December but he ran no sort of race and struggled through the winter thereafter. He did put up two half decent runs in March, finishing third twice and that sort of form alone should see him involved in this sort of race. Add in the scope he has to progress now that he gets a chance to run on decent ground over hurdles for the first time and he could prove a tough nut to crack.
First Class Ticket can give him most to do. He ran well to finish fourth to another Joseph O’Brien inmate Cook Islands at Punchestown and can build on that.
Selection: TREE OF KNOWLEDGE
Next best: First Class Ticket
2.25 IRISH STALLION FARMS EBF MARES RATED NOVICE HURDLE 2M 80Y
This is an interesting mares’ rated race and should come down to the top two, Tay Lane, trained by Willie Mullins, and Arbor Des Champs, trained by Mullins’s nephew Emmet. Both were impressive winners on their previous runs and although both have yet to be assigned a rating, it can be assumed they are at least somewhere in the high 120s which leaves their rivals with a bit to find. Very slight preference is for Tay Lane, who is having her first run for Mullins, having been bought out of Niall Madden’s yard after her impressive Tipperary win.
Selection: TAY LANE
Next best: Arbor Des Champs
2.55 TAYLOR CONSTRUCTION & CIVIL WORKS MAIDEN HURDLE 2M 80Y
This is a fairly moderate field so Boherbuoy may be able to overcome inexperience on his first start over hurdles and fitness on his first run in 305 days. Owned by J.P. McManus and trained by Niall Madden, the son of Galileo is a useful sort on the level, where he holds a rating of 86. If he can translate that sort of standard he should win. Gordon Elliott’s Canny Tom ran well at Bellewstown to finish second to Aeglos and has been consistent over hurdles so far. He’ll be there or thereabouts again.
Selection: BOHERBUOY
Next best: Canny Tom
3.30 JOE HENRY MEMORIAL HANDICAP HURDLE 2M 80Y
Roachdale House’s form received a substantial boost when Timiyan, who he finished second to on his previous run at Roscommon, won a good race at Bellewstown last week. Paul Flynn’s horse has a nice profile now, as a six-year-old with just five runs over hurdles and coming into this off back of his best effort yet.
Fridaynightlights finished fourth to Magic Of Light in a good handicap hurdle at the Punchestown Festival but he was pulled-up on his previous run so there is a doubt about his current state. Maudlin Magdalen has a shout. She is a useful flat performer, rated 83 in that sphere, but there were signs that she was getting the hang of things over hurdles at Bellewstown last week. She can improve again today.
Selection: ROACHDALE HOUSE
Next best: Maudlin Magdalen
4.05 DURKIN BROS ELECTRICAL HANDICAP HURDLE 2M 4F 110Y
Royal Roslea is a tentative selection for this open handicap hurdle. Matthew Smith’s gelding ran with credit at Punchestown last time out, leading to the last before tiring to finish fifth. It was only his sixth start over hurdles so he has the scope to improve, unlike most of the rivals he faces today. Cnoc Na Sioga ran okay at Tipperary on his previous run and should be suited to today’s trip. Captains And Kings is another to note, as a course and distance winner who looked to be back in form after a second place finish at Kilbeggan last month.
Selection: ROYAL ROSLEA
Next best: Captains And Kings
4.35 KILCAWLEY CONSTRUCTION OPPORTUNITY HANDICAP HURDLE 2M 4F 110Y
The feature race on the card can go to John Ryan’s Kilcarry Bridge. The 10-year-old comes into this in top form having won the McHale Mayo National at Ballinrobe on his previous run. He is a much better horse over fences but he races off a 17lb lower mark over hurdles today and he has some useful form over the smaller obstacles having won a good handicap hurdle at Ballinrobe three seasons ago and finished fifth in a good three-mile handicap hurdle at Leopardstown last Christmas, both off his current rating. He should take all the beating.
Eight Till Late is another coming into this off a good chase win, although at a less impressive standard. Bendenalla also deserves respect as a course winner and he ran well over fences as well on his previous run.
Selection: KILCARRY BRIDGE
Next best: Eight Till Late
5.10 FOLEY’S BAR & OFF LICENCE FLAT RACE 2M 2F
There is very little to go on here and it’s likely Itsonlyrockandroll will start favourite, representing Willie and Patrick Mullins. A son of Shantou, he likely won’t have to be up the usual standard of his trainer’s bumper horses to win here on his racecourse debut. Trump Sixteen may be best of the rest, although the market will be the best guide on any of the newcomers. He wasn’t disgraced when finishing midfield in a Roscommon bumper last time out and wears a first-time tongue tie.
Selection: ITSONLYROCKANDROLL
Next best: Trump Sixteen
