Newmarket Saturday

1:33 British Stallion Studs EBF Chalice Stakes (Listed) 1m 4f

Not a great heat, but Miss Justice is entitled to go well down in grade. She just lost out for third in the Lancashire Oaks over course and distance last time and was beaten only a neck by Karmology in the Group 3 Pride Stakes over this trip on the Rowley Course last autumn.

The track clearly suits her and the drop back to listed company gives her a chance to get her head in front for the first time since joining Brian Meehan.

Goodwood Saturday

1:50 Highclere Castle Gin

Summer Handicap 1m 6f

Sing Us A Song disappointed in a mile and a half handicap at last year’s meeting but had excuses then, having got upset in the stalls to the degree that he had to be unloaded. He ran on his nerves that day, weakening late, but showed the form to be all wrong when winning over this trip at Haydock.

Runner-up that day was leading Ebor fancy Klassleader, who turned the tables over a shorter trip at York in May, but Sing Us A Song ran creditably in second before an even better run in the Copper Horse Handicap at Royal Ascot where he was badly hampered in the final furlong by the runner-up and better than a fifth-place finish would imply.

Sing Us A Song remains unexposed at a mile and three-quarters and has often shaped as if there is a big handicap in him. This looks an excellent opportunity and easier than the Ebor, for which he is also entered.

2:25 Coral Glorious Stakes (Group 3) 1m 3f 218y

In My Teens is an unusual runner for Gavin Cromwell and J.P. McManus at this fixture but the daughter of Camelot could well be underestimated having run away with the prestigious Ragusa Handicap at the Irish Derby meeting last month.

On that occasion, In My Teens raced in touch before being produced to lead a furlong out and did remarkably well to put seven lengths between herself and runner-up This Songisforyou at the line.

That is smart form, marking her down as a pattern-class performer, so this jump to Group 3 company should not be insurmountable by any means, with a literal reading of her handicap win putting her top on ratings here.

It’s always something of a worry backing horses graduating from handicaps at this level, especially when the likes of Al Aasy have won so often at this level, but that rival is entitled to be on the wane at the age of nine, whereas In My Teens is just a four-year-old and entitled to do better yet.

At the odds, I reckon she’s worth chancing to bridge the gap.

3:00 Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes (Group 2) 1m 6f

I would be happy to forgive Santorini Star her effort in the Hardwicke last time, and there is little doubt that this trip suits her better in any case, but while she beat Consent in the Park Hill Stakes at Doncaster last season, the latter turned the tables in no uncertain terms when beating Santorini Star by four and a half lengths in the Prix de Royallieu at Longchamp in October and ought to confirm that form, for all she’s no longer in receipt of the three-year-old allowance as she was then.

Consent shaped as if needing the run on her return in the Prix Vicomtesse Vigier in May, at a time when her stable had not got up and running, but she will have done plenty of work since then with a view to an autumn campaign.

She is a Group 1 winner without a penalty in a Group 2 contest and has obvious claims if back to her best.

3:35 Coral Stewards’ Cup

(Heritage Handicap) 6f

I’d prefer to be drawn high than middle in the Stewards’ Cup, although there is always a chance that the low numbers can get loose here, as when Khaadem won in 2019.

On balance, though, I would focus on those drawn 20 or higher, and the first horse to catch my eye was Far Above Dream, who is unbeaten in three runs over course and distance and seems to have improved again this year, following a win at Newbury with an excellent fourth at 28/1 in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot where he was a selection here.

That was as good a run as he has produced to date but there must be a chance he can top it now back at Goodwood and he has got lucky with a draw in stall 23, which should enable him to get an ideal tow into the race. That tow is likely to come from 2024 winner Get It, who won twice at Ascot last season, including the Wokingham, but has failed to beat a rival in three races since. He was drawn 28 when making every yard here two years ago and if George Baker has got him back to form, he looks well berthed in stall 27 to attempt a repeat.

It’s hard to predict whether he will bounce back or run another stinker, but he’s tremendously quick over the first few furlongs and should at least ensure the high-drawn horses are pulled along at a strong pace.

Run Boy Run is drawn one away from the selection in stall 24 and should also figure prominently having shaped better than the result over five furlongs here earlier in the week.

The return to six furlongs will help last year’s fourth, and he took off from late summer in 2025, so is likely to have a say.

4:10 Phase Eight Handicap 7f

Richard Hughes might hold the key to this handicap as he saddles a couple of interesting runners, including Marengo Storm, winner of two of his four starts, including in a seven-furlong handicap at Newmarket on his latest start.

That was just a three-runner affair, but the runner-up was beaten a whisker next time and the third was well held, so the form looks sound, and Marengo Storm is entitled to improve further.

He’s also fared best with the draw, with stall 1 a bonus here, whereas stablemate Startled, a course and distance winner in May, is stuck wide in stall 12.
