FOZZY Stack has already enjoyed a week he’ll never forget at Royal Ascot thanks to a first winner at the meeting with Nola Soul (Chesham Stakes), but it’s no longshot that he could maintain his 100% strike rate at this year’s fixture when Thesecretadversary lines up in today’s Jersey Stakes (4.20).
A rock-solid second in the Chesham at Royal Ascot 12 months ago, the St Mark’s Basilica colt has raised his game another level at three this season. A cosy victory over Power Blue in the Ballylinch Stud Red Rocks Stakes on his comeback means the mount of Seamie Heffernan must carry a 3lb Group 3-winning penalty, but he’s right in the mix on official figures in terms of talent (only two rated higher than him here and officially only 2lb off the top mark).
Representing Cayton Park Stud and Mrs John Magnier, he emerged with credit from his fifth behind Bow Echo and Gstaad in the Betfred 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, and a line can be drawn through his Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas sixth. Thesecretadversary was repeatedly denied racing room from his inside draw in stall one and probably did well to only be beaten five lengths.
“It was a great day for everyone here on Thursday – days like that are why we are all in this game,” Stack told The Irish Field.
“Thesecretadversary has travelled over well and seems to be coming here in good form. Obviously we’re drawn in stall two for this, and the way that the straight track races have been playing out over the first few days, you’d naturally be a little concerned. That said, we’ve seen in the past that it can change quickly.
“Unfortunately he was locked up against the rail from the word go in the Irish Guineas and got no run. Quicker ground doesn’t seem to bother him and if everything goes to plan, I think he’ll run a big race.”
Stack also has interest in the action at another British track this afternoon. He sends Cork maiden winner Cardiff By The Sea to Ayr for the Listed Land O’Burns Fillies’ Stakes (4.08), having finished fourth behind True Love in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot on this very week 12 months ago.
“We’ve had a bit of luck with blacktype races at Ayr before and we’re sending this filly up there,” said Stack.
“If she could finish in the first three, we’d be delighted, but I think they’ve had a lot of rain up there. I think the sharpness of Ayr will suit her a lot better than what she faced at Naas last time [when down the field after showing early speed in the Listed Woodlands Stakes].”
