11.30 Kells Maiden Hurdle 2m

Great Bear sets a fair standard here so might be able to see off some potentially smart French imports. Second in Grade 3 company on his hurdling debut, he disappointed slightly next time but is worth another chance. He unquestionably wants a trip so the more prominently he races the better his chances.

Manitopark AA is an intriguing runner as he was successful in five of his six runs on the flat in France. A long absence is certainly not a concern and his trainer excels with similar types.

SELECTION: GREAT BEAR

Grangeclare Native, who was only just denied in a similar race over course and distance last time, can make amends. The five-year-old was staying on again when slightly hampered close home so is perhaps unlucky to retain his maiden status. Despite the presence of a couple of decent types, he should be good enough.

Minella Escape was still in front when coming to grief last time but looked in a bit of trouble at the time. It was still a very promising effort so he has to be a leading contender.

Forged In Fire is an exciting recruit to hurdling having beaten the subsequent Cheltenham bumper winner on his sole start. He holds an entry in a Grade 1 Novice Hurdle at Leopardstown over the Christmas period so connections will be hoping he does enough to merit a run in that latter race.

Clondaw Secret has yet to race under rules but the form of his point-to-point win looks particularly strong. Much depends on his fitness levels in relation to the O’Brien horse but if fully tuned up he could be a real threat.

Tout Est Permis faced what in hindsight was an impossible task when runner-up in this race last season. A repeat bid has almost certainly been the plan and, fresh from a career best in Grade 1 company over fences last time, he arrives in the peak of form. A previous course and distance winner who appreciates the stiff track, everything looks in place for a huge run.

Shattered Love, a Grade 1 winner over fences, commands plenty of respect reverting to hurdles. However, the mare hasn’t raced over flights in almost three years so might just find it happening a bit quick for her on this occasion.

The Big Getaway takes the first steps here on a journey that could potentially lead to a Cheltenham bid next March. A high-class point-to-pointer, he did very well over hurdles last season, culminating in a third place finish in the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle.

However, there was never any doubt that he was just marking time over flights as chasing was always going to be his game.

Conflated was also placed in graded company over hurdles last season, although he failed to reach the heights of The Big Getaway. On the plus side, he has had two runs over fences already this campaign so will lack for nothing in terms of race fitness and experience.

SELECTION: THE BIG GETAWAY

Andy Dufresne has always had a huge reputation upon which for the most part he has delivered on. Having won his point-to-point, bumper and maiden hurdle at the first time of asking, he then got beat in Grade 2 company before winning in that same class on his next start.

If anything, he probably showed so much ability that the step-up in grade just caught him out. Chasing has always looked his forte and he made an exciting start to that career at Wexford.

Embittered was actually rated slightly higher over hurdles and arguably achieved more. He did nothing wrong when chasing home a very smart horse on his fencing debut at this venue last time so looks a real danger.

SELECTION: ANDY DUFRESNE

Next best: Embittered

Treacysenniscorthy has yet to capitalise on a potentially lenient mark over fences but this could be the day. A winner over fences at Listowel last year, he went on to improve a total of 38lb over hurdles. Despite coming up short when reverting to fences at this track last March, he remains of serious interest off his current rating.

Articulum is the class horse in the race so has to be respected. Despite failing to finish in almost half of his starts over fences he has shown on the remaining occasions that he is a very smart chaser.

Kilcruit was well fancied when second on his only start thus far and subsequently changed stables. Patrick Mullins, who rode the horse on his debut, keeps the partnership intact so he obviously felt there was better to come. He sets a decent standard against some interesting newcomers.

Killer Mode is perhaps the most intriguing of the debutants with Pat Taaffe an eyecatching booking for Noel Meade. The latter always has to be feared with bumper horses here.
