Donnacha O’Brien’s pair showed promise on debut on separate occasions at Cork and preference today is for the fifth-placed Fleur De Rose.

She was left to lead that day, which may not have been the plan, and her performance can be upgraded after the winner, Suzie Songs, subsequently won the Anglesey Stakes, while the third horse filled the same place in a Group 2.

They may not have been the strongest of group races but the Cork runner-up also subsequently impressed at Naas, where a green Practical Move was beaten 12 and a half lengths, with Darwin’s Angel another five lengths further back.

Of the newcomers, Ballydoyle’s Wootton Bassett filly Cactus holds obvious appeal, though she may be seen to better effect over further. Eat Pray Run, who cost 200,000gns as a yearling, has a much speedier pedigree.

The form of The Piper’s Call’s debut second has worked out well, with the winner later headed close home in a Group 3, while the third horse subsequently bolted up and runs in today’s listed feature.

Howd’yadoit finished second on debut behind a colt who subsequently placed at Royal Ascot. Down Royal’s undulating track didn’t help his chances next time, when he finished strongly to take third behind stablemate Sir Alfie, and he is expected to reverse the form today.

Of the newcomers, preference is for Just A City Boy, who cost 200,000gns at the breeze-ups.

Robyn Donaghue-Leahy has been booked to counteract Carrigans Grove’s hike in the weights after beating American In Paris by a head here last time out. Today’s extra 205 yards and change in the weights could make all the difference to Paul Flynn’s mare, who was finishing strongly that day and remains at a lower mark than her two handicap wins.

Jackandthefox has also shown promise behind Carrigans Grove but it’s difficult to fancy a six-year-old maiden, despite placing on his last three starts. Stanhope is worth a look after dropping down to his last winning mark.

SELECTION: AMERICAN IN PARIS

3.42 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies & Mares Handicap 5f 205yds

Kwa Herini remains at a workable mark after finishing second at the Curragh and faces an easier task than when she finished a length and a quarter behind Gazelle d’Or in April.

The three-year-old Tropical Retreat has also shown promise behind today’s topweight, as well as when fifth at Cork, when her saddle slipped.

The performance was boosted when the winner finished second in the Rockingham last weekend. Tom Mullins’ charge also had excuses last time out, when she was slowly away and later headed by a seemingly well-handicapped rival.

Agouti Bear is worth a chance on the shortlist, having been dropped 2lb after her last start, when she got upset in stalls. Aurora Nova comes here seeking a hat-trick, but it’s a big ask just two days since her last win.

SELECTION: TROPICAL RETREAT

4.17 Irish EBF Pat Smullen Stakes (Listed Race) 1m

Daytona and North Coast both shaped like smart colts when getting off the mark and their dams’ pedigrees suggest today’s trip will be to their liking.

Marginal preference is for Joseph O’Brien’s charge as the form of his debut third has worked out well, with the winner subsequently narrowly denied in a Group 3.

His form seems to be of a higher grade than some of the others with form. Pat Smullen’s memory has no doubt influenced some of those debuting in this race, but they must also be held in some regard to be launched at listed level.

It would be a poignant win for Moyglare, whose home-bred Blue Blue Moon is by a freshman sire responsible for two group horses to date. Fellow newcomers Genchev and Wyman, who cost 85,000gns and 100,000 respectively, are both well-related and worth watching in the betting.

SELECTION: NORTH COAST

Next best: Daytona

Casheldale Lass is the only contender who comes here off the back of a win, for which she received 12lb. It’s a significant hike for beating low-grade rivals, but it’s difficult to get excited about any of these.

She now faces last month’s favourite, What’s New, off level weights. First-time visors should help Andy Slattery’s representative to bridge the gap and also reverse the form with Lisnadill, who finished half a length in front of him that day.

SELECTION: CASHELDALE LASS

5.20 TRM Calphormin Rated Race 7f

The impressive nature of First Wave’s maiden victory and his early form suggests he can win this. Back down in grade after a trip to Ascot, there may be more to come from him, while Storm Piece may struggle at this rating, considering his handicap debut.

Iceford also faces a tough task but Mathan looks worth another chance after jumping slow and almost clipping heels last time, on what was his first start since being gelded.

Fingerpaint is more of an unknown but there was plenty to like about her debut win over this trip, when the penny only seemed to drop late on.
