Bright Tomorrow finished down the field in a Punchestown bumper last week but his previous form would suggest that he can be closely involved. On his penultimate run he was fourth to Battleford at Punchestown and his second to Ballela Boy in a Naas bumper in November is another good run. He can overcome a lack of previous jumping experience to see off Wakea.

The latter makes his debut for Karl Thornton and he wasn’t at his best on his last couple of flat runs but it should be noted that he was rated 104 on the level this time last year. Balzac Turgot finished eighth on his racecourse debut in November but that run came in a quality Fairyhouse bumper won by Lucky Pass. He could now do much better.

This is a good opportunity for Billy’s Hope. Last time out she ran a respectable sixth in a Fairyhouse Grade 1 won by Jer’s Girl while she looked desperately unlucky when losing out by a nose to Pride Of The Braid at Leopardstown in January. Her third to Coney Island at Christmas is another good effort and that standard of form puts her well ahead of these rivals. Poetic Lady showed a nice level of ability on her first two runs last season, which included a Roscommon bumper success. She could easily make her presence felt on her jumping debut while West Bridge, a runner-up to Miss Me Now and Msmilan on her last two starts, is another that could definitely be involved.

Selection: BILLY’S HOPE

Next Best: West Bridge

Colbert Station is a speculative choice. On his two runs this year he was well beaten in a Thurles conditions hurdle won by Jennies Jewel while last week he contested a charity race at Punchestown. Significantly though he is back to the same rating that saw him win a Pertemps Qualifier at Punchestown several seasons ago.

If this formerly classy chaser can return to anything like his best he must have a good chance. Oscar Lantern is interesting as he won’t find this race as competitive as the Punchestown handicap in which he finished in midfield behind Cup Final. Furthermore he is fitted with cheek pieces and he has dropped 5lbs since he first moved into handicaps. Twiss’s Hill has recorded dominant handicap hurdle wins at this track on heavy ground in recent months. She is now 23lbs higher in the weights and is encountering much better ground.

Selection: COLBERT STATION

The former winning pointer Deans Road can get his chasing career off to a successful start. He followed up a respectable debut third in a Fairyhouse bumper by winning a maiden hurdle at this track over Christmas. Those runs came on testing ground and he will be encountering an altogether different surface here but he is still chosen ahead of the experienced Goulane Chosen. The latter has been running creditably throughout the last number of months and certainly deserves to make his mark in a beginner’s chase. A number of his efforts give him a leading chance and this 118-rated gelding sets the standard for the selection.

Selection: DEANS ROAD

Perfect Woman faces a stiff task on ratings and at the weights - she has to concede five pounds (before claims are taken into account) to Definite Ruby who has 3lbs to spare on official figures. However, it may be worth taking a chance on the Michael Winters-trained mare who was only just beaten in a mares Grade 3 at Navan in December. Perfect Woman hasn’t run since posting a below par effort at Thurles in January and now switches to much better ground but encouragingly she did win her maiden hurdle on a sound surface.

Definite Ruby is a worthy favourite having won a valuable mares handicap chase over 2m 5f at Punchestown last week. She had to fight hard for that success though and her chief rival has had a nice break since she last ran.

Selection: PERFECT WOMAN

He is a reliable sort who deserves to get his turn at this level and Dr Moloney is put forward. The nine-year-old has finished no worse than third in his last four handicap chase outings and these include a second to Finea at Down Royal in February along with a 5l third to Kylestyle back at that track in March. That form entitles him to run well and, encouragingly, his only previous career win was achieved on good ground. Off The Charts was a useful hurdler at his best. He hasn’t done as well over fences so far but he could step forward as he makes his first venture into handicaps and he won’t have any problem with the better ground.

Selection: DR MOLONEY

Next Best: Off The Charts

Dixie Lee was rewarded for several very solid runs in defeat when she got off the mark in a Down Royal bumper two months ago. As a daughter of Holy Roman Emperor she is entitled to step forward again for the switch to better ground and she might be able to deal with Bel Sas who progressed from his debut outing at Navan to win a Downpatrick bumper by 11l next time out. The Green Lady looked a nice type when she made a winning debut at Fairyhouse last month. She is another credible contender.
