Assemble: Course-and-distance winner on the corresponding card last Christmas. Has been campaigned in the best of company since then; running as well as could have been expected when second to a high-class novice in the Drinmore Chase last time.

Asterion Forlonge: Easily beat Assemble on his sole point-to-point start. Unbeaten in three starts under rules before a creditable fourth in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham. Made a winning debut over fences at Punchestown last month and remains a horse of great potential.

Janidil: Came through the handicap ranks last season before running really well in Grade 1 company at Cheltenham. Plenty to like about his winning return over fences at Naas recently. Has a bit to find with Asterion Forlonge on hurdles ratings but looks to be an improving sort who may not have peaked just yet.

Pencilfulloflead: Second to Asterion Forlonge at Naas in January but has improved since then. Unbeaten in two starts over fences, including in a Grade 2 chase at Punchestown last time out. Slight concern that he may need farther, but he will be staying on better than most.

Colreevy: Very decent bumper mare/hurdler who receives weight from her rivals now. Strictly on form she will need to improve to win but must have every chance of adding yet more blacktype to her already impressive record.

Verdict

A race that should chiefly concern the Willie Mullins duo Asterion Forlonge and Janidil, with slight preference for the former. A Grade 1 winner over hurdles last season, he possesses plenty of class and should improve on his recent debut over fences.

Janidil probably has more scope for improvement as he continues to defy all expectations. It would be no surprise to see him make a bold bid.

Pencilfulloflead could also enter calculations if the race develops into a test.
