There was a promising barrier trial introduction for the Jessica Harrington-trained Noble Honour at Leopardstown last month over seven furlongs, and trying a mile now ought to be in her favour. Zhang Yuesheng’s Siyouni filly is a half-sister to this year’s Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris winner Leffard and the runner-up from that same Leopardstown trial was beaten only half a length in second in a Punchestown maiden this week.
Ice Dancer was sent off the 5/2 favourite on debut for what looked a warm Curragh maiden, but her chance was dented significantly when having to take a check from the winner and she ended up only beating one home. The third has won a maiden since, and the fourth wasn’t disgraced in deep waters at the Irish Champions Festival. This sister to Irish Derby runner-up Serious Contender can show more now at a mile.

By sire-of-the-moment Wootton Bassett and out of a Group 3-winning Aga Khan mare, Hamiyan is bred to be smart and he’s certainly getting the hang of things on the basis of what he showed when second to a smart Ballydoyle colt at Galway last time. It’s a slightly quick turnaround for a youngster to come here on likely testing ground again, but his experience ought to stand to him.
Adel ran better than his finishing position suggested in the same Galway maiden as Christmas Day and shaped with a degree of promise in a likely useful Curragh maiden since (third-placed Port Of Spain won at Punchestown this week). If building on that again, he mightn’t be too far away.
SELECTION: HAMIYAN

There’s a question to answer for Purple Lily after disappointing on her comeback in listed company at Roscommon 11 weeks ago, and she returns in a first-time visor, but she is the class act of the race if able to recapture last season’s form. She had been a model of consistency prior to that blowout as 11/10 favourite and it’s possible that this trip on easy ground could be perfectly suitable.
Faiyum’s second to Barnavara when surrendering her unbeaten record looks a lot better now, with the winner landing the Group 2 Blandford Stakes last weekend. She’s had time to freshen since then and looks the coming force among the three-year-olds in this event.
SELECTION: PURPLE LILY
Next best: Faiyum

Manhattan Dandy has tended to show his best around tracks like this on easy ground over seven furlongs and a mile, so he’s worth taking a chance on after hitting the crossbar behind a stablemate at Roscommon last time. He’s 2lb lower now after a revision of the vast majority of handicappers in Ireland since, and he’s entitled to be thereabouts if able to get across early from stall 12.
Top-weight Purring Along was a bit of an eye-catcher when seventh in heavy traffic at the Curragh three starts ago and was sent off the 100/30 favourite last time, but she couldn’t land a blow from behind with how the race unfolded. Back up to a mile now, don’t discount a much better effort here. Last-time-out winner Chou Chou should appreciate any rain.
SELECTION: MANHATTAN DANDY

The last time that Pandion Power raced in this basement grade and ran at Gowran Park, he was an impressive handicap winner here last autumn off the same mark as today (and ridden by this 7lb-claiming apprentice). He’s posted some below-par efforts at times this year, but the ground probably hasn’t been as slow as he really wants. He’s got an excellent draw.
Edergole’s Angel disappointed from a wide draw after getting behind at Galway last time, but her previous fifth at this venue in a higher grade than this wasn’t a bad showing. She could surprise a few if back to that type of form. Recent Clonmel third Pink Socks is another for the shortlist.
SELECTION: PANDION POWER

4.35 Racing Again October 3rd & 4th Maiden 1m 1f 100yd
Johnny Murtagh won this maiden 12 months ago with an Aga Khan homebred by Lope De Vega, and Elman looks another big player for him (and the same sire/ownership group) now in a race restricted to horses who have run at least twice and not exceeded a mark of 70. He looked green on debut at Fairyhouse in June but still showed a hint of promise, then was withdrawn when not entering the stalls at the Curragh and possibly didn’t prove a natural Dundalk type when well-beaten in a maiden there 10 weeks ago. Facing slower ground for the first time now, he could be a better operator - though the draw in stall 18 makes life a little tricky.
This race looks pretty open overall, and perhaps the 68-rated Teffian Warrior could have a say if this trip doesn’t prove beyond him. He ran well enough over six furlongs on debut at the Curragh and shaped as though he’d have learned a fair deal from finishing fifth in a Galway Festival maiden over seven furlongs when last seen. Putapoundinthejar might find this trip on the sharp side but is a talented hurdler worth a market check, while Some Good Men Gone has snippets of form to make him a big player.
SELECTION: ELMAN

Convincing isn’t overly exposed and ran a cracker from a horror draw in stall 19 on his debut for new connections at the Galway Festival, beaten a length in fifth of 18 runners. Turning out quickly over a furlong shorter didn’t suit later that week when down the field and, if that hasn’t left a mark, he could be a lively one here - albeit the draw hasn’t been kind again in stall 16. This longer trip is also a question mark for him, though it’s possible that it might help eke out some improvement. He handles soft ground.
Positive Energy is a big threat now that he gets to drop in class again. He won a maiden hurdle on heavy ground so the rain shouldn’t be a big worry - and it might actually help him over a trip that’s possibly shorter than he’d typically be running over on the flat.
SELECTION: CONVINCING
Next best: Positive Energy
5.40 Gowran Park For Golf Race 7f
This looks a smart piece of placing from connections of Gleneagle Bay if he has recovered sufficiently from his fourth in the €150,000 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Sovereign Path Handicap last weekend at Leopardstown. He was a warm order for such a competitive race then (SP 7/4 favourite) and he didn’t appear to have any obvious excuses. He’s beginning to get a little frustrating, winless in nine starts since his debut and second on four occasions, but he has the ability to win this.
Akecheta has been running with credit in valuable British handicaps this season and has enough talent to be a big player here, but the trip is the biggest concern. Perhaps slow ground will bring her into it, fresh from dead-heating for second over an extended 10 furlongs at York last time. Wannabe Royal will appreciate dropping in grade from blacktype company, while Sonoran must bounce back from a disappointing Roscommon performance last time over further.
SELECTION: GLENEAGLE BAY
