1.00 Gowranpark.ie 3-Y-0 Maiden Hurdle 2m

Stand Staunch should be able to go one better here, having finished second on his first completed start at Killarney. Prior to that, Joseph O’Brien’s juvenile had been brought down in a messy affair at Roscommon. Having obviously suffered no ill effects from that incident, he can put his experience to good use now.

Inca Prince, a decent handicapper on the level, should improve from his recent debut at Listowel. Although no match for the principals on that occasion, he will know more about the job this time.

Bite That could be the answer to what looks a very ordinary maiden hurdle. Second at Listowel two weeks ago, he had some fair maidens behind but the overall form of that race was nothing special. At the same time, it looks just about the best piece of hurdles form on offer here, so he is given the nod.

Helisone is an interesting debutant with Aidan Coleman in the saddle. Connections obviously expect a big run from their filly as they have waited until their Champion Chase-winning jockey was available .

Tullyhogue Fort can make it back-to-back wins, having won easily at Galway earlier in the month. A 12lbs rise seemed harsh given the fact it was an ordinary race but connections have wisely opted to take some of that burden off with a 7lb claimer taking over in the saddle.

Influential Lady, third in a stronger race at Listowel recently, looks the biggest threat. Despite having a very inconsistent profile, the daughter of Doyen has shown enough to suggest a race of this nature is well within her capabilities.

Tullybeg faces no easy task giving weight away to these rivals but the top-weight looks the class act in the race. Having made a winning return to action at Navan earlier in the month, he won’t lack for fitness and is one of only a handful that are guaranteed to stay the three-mile distance.

Kilashee, at the foot of the handicap, faces a stiff task but is hard to dismiss as she comes into this in great form. She had her rivals beaten a long way from home at Listowel last time.

3.20 PWC Champion Chase (Grade 2) 2m 4f

Easy Game arrives here as the form horse and while he may struggle to beat one or two of these later in the season, this could be his turn to shine. Runner-up in the Galway Plate, he went one better when beating a better treated rival in Ballyoisin at the Harvest Festival last time. A former course-and-distance winner, he will be a hard horse to beat.

Champion Chase winner Put The Kettle On is the class mare in the race and will win easily if at her peak. However, she steps up in trip for this return and will need to be at her best to see off some race-fit rivals.

Cerberus, who is very well-handicapped over fences relative to his hurdle rating, should be ready to strike now. Joseph O’Brien’s five-year-old has had four runs over fences, including an outing in handicap company last time. Stepping up in trip on this occasion, he has plenty going for him.

O Connell Street remains relatively unexposed in this country, having done much of his racing in Britain. An easy win at Perth last time is hard to evaluate so perhaps he has got in here off a mark which could be exploited.

SELECTION: CERBERUS

Fully Charged can put his experience in handicap company to good use by seeing off some less experienced rivals. Henry De Bromhead’s grey is a tough front-runner, who jumps well in the main and keeps galloping. With the blinkers applied for the first time, he should be a hard horse to peg back.

Definite Plan deserves a change of luck, having been second in his two most recent starts over fences. Davy Russell, the only man to have won on the nine-year-old, returns to take the ride and that has to be a positive.

Spades Are Trumps has been found an excellent opportunity here to follow up his last-time-out win at Kilbeggan. The son of Yeats is a solid, experienced handicap chaser, who reverted to a beginners’ chase to get off the mark at the midlands track. The conditions of this rated race are very much in his favour.

The Dabbler boasts a similar profile to the Cromwell horse, aside from the fact he is rated 7lbs lower. He has the experience to make his presence felt and comes into the race on the back of a recent win but strictly on ratings he has it all to do.
