THERE is a very good chance that an Irishman will train the winner of Sunday’s Deutsches Derby in Hamburg as Paul Harley from Donegal trains the warm favourite Shimrano. The race will be shown live on At The Races (4.10pm).

Harley, uncle of jockey Martin Harley, took over as trainer of Baron Georg von Ullman’s horses in 2012 from Jens Hirschberger, who in turn had replaced Peter Schiergen in the job.

Shimrano is the stable star and now races in the colours of an Australian syndicate who bought into the horse in the hope that the Monsun colt could one day follow in the hoofprints of Protectionist and win the Melbourne Cup.

In winning the Group 2 Oppenheim-Union-Rennen last time out, Shimrano has shown himself to be possibly even above that class and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe could be on his agenda if he wins tomorrow.

The opposition has been weakened by two high-profile non-runners. German 2000 Guineas winner Karpino is injured (see page A27) and the well-touted Sea The Stars horse Quasillo is also on the sidelines.

Paddy Power bets: 6/2 Shimrano, 4 Nutan, 13/2 Isidor, 8 Aero, Nordic Flight, 16 Iraklion, Palace Prince, Rogue Runner, 20/1 bar.
