A FIELD of 18 three-year-olds, including one filly, face the starter for the German Derby in Hamburg tomorrow.
With Aidan O’Brien choosing not to run Trinity College, the overseas challenge comes from the Newtown Anner Stud-owned Convergent from the Karl Burke stable.
The homebred son of Fascinating Rock finished third to Lambourn and Lazy Griff, beaten three and a half lengths by the winner in the Chester Vase, for that looks much better now following the winner’s dual Derby wins. He had won his only previous two outings at two and three at Redcar.
Newtown Anner Stud also bred another fancied runner in the Alessandro Botti-trained Juwelier, the son of Wootton Bassett was unsold at Arqana this week for €1,100,000.
He won the Group 3 Japan Racing Association Derby-Trial at Baden-Baden at the end of May beating the favourite Path Of Soldier who reopposes here.
The main trial for this, the Group 2 Sparkasse KolnBonn – 190th Union-Rennen at Cologne over nine furlongs in early June went to the favourite Zuckerhut, the son of Almanzour trained by Peter Schiergen.
Delgardo won Dusseldorf’s Listed Merkur Spielbanken Derby Trial in June for trainer Andreas Wohler.
Another Wohler-trained, the filly Lady Charlotte won the Group 3 Diana-Trial der Best Place Immobilien over 10 furlongs at Hoppegarten in June.
The Sheriff also runs for Chantilly-based Irishman Tim Donworth.
