TUESDAY’s Group 1 Grosser Preis von Bayern over a mile and a half in Munich looks like being the best race of the year in Germany. Nine runners are declared, including three from Newmarket, Hawkbill (Charlie Appleby/William Buick), Racing History (Saeed bin Suroor/Ioritz Mendizibal) and Algometer (David Simcock/Jim Crowley).

The two Godolphin runners were supplemented on Thursday. Hawkbill won the Eclipse Stakes back in July and last time out was ninth in the Irish Champion Stakes, and Racing History was sixth in the English version recently on his only start so far in 2016.

These are probably the best pieces of form on offer, but both Godolphin runners have been campaigned so far over 10 furlongs and have never run over this trip. Algometer, on the other hand, looks as if he has long been aimed at this race, which was won by his dam Albanova in 2004, at a time when it was run in Cologne in August.

The local defence looks strong, even though the best older horse in Germany, Protectionist, was a late withdrawal. However, Iquitos (Hans-Jürgen Gröschel / Ian Ferguson), winner of the Grosser Preis von Baden, is a formidable opponent who should be well suited by this track, and three-year-old Savoir Vivre (Jean-Pierre Carvalho/Christophe Soumillon) is an obvious contender; he was beaten a head in the German Derby and then ran a good race in the Arc, in which he finished best of all after a slow start to end in eighth, the best of his age group.

His trainer has won both runnings of this race since it was moved to its present date and clearly means business by booking the star Belgian jockey.
