DEAUVILLE SATURDAY
SENGA will be one of the most fancied of 10 fillies in this afternoon’s Group 2 Shadwell Prix de la Nonette. Pascal Bary raced the daughter of Blame for the first time over further than a mile and Senga captured the 10 1/2 furlong Prix de Diane Longines in a fast time and with something on hand.
John Gosden’s Shutter Speed was fourth in the Chantilly classic. Unbeaten before her visit to France, the filly had previously won the Group 3 Musidora Stakes at York. She has a length and a half to find over her old rival and Deauville is a very different track to Chantilly.
The Diane had an incident just under two furlongs out when Onthemoonagain fell with Christophe Soumillon when in a challenging position. The filly has since ran a close third in the Group 3 Prix de Psyche to Vue Fantastique who was hampered a little when waiting to pounce in the Diane before finishing 11th.
Charlie Appleby sends Sobetsu back to Deauville where in May she thrashed Vue Fantastique three lengths in The Gurkha Coolmore Prix de Saint-Alary. She later did not stay the distance in the Investec Oaks but was a respectable third last time in the Qatar Nassau Stakes at Goodwood.
Strathspey is a very promising filly trained by Andre Fabre. She only began racing in May and by early July had taken the Group 2 Prix de Malleret at Saint-Cloud. Arajaa will be making her debut at a major track and she recently landed a hat-trick when collecting a listed event at Vichy. Ibiza looks the best of the others.
PRIX DU CALVADOS
The Group 3 Shadwell Prix du Calvados has attracted 11 runners and seven of the field are trained in England. But the honour of France could be saved by the presence of Polydream who caught the eye when making a winning debut at this track last month. She is inexperienced but the daughter of Oasis Dream is brim full of quality and should again hold Anne-Marie Hayes’ Fou Rire.
Karl Burke’s Laurens won a maiden over this distance at Doncaster and the runner-up has since franked the form. Burke’s other runner well behind Tom Dascombe’s Capomento who failed by inches to win a listed race at Sandown.
Trained by Paul Cole, Musical Art finished just ahead of Charlie Appleby’s Spring Cosmos in the Princess Margaret Stakes at Ascot and Richard Hannon has form lines that led him to running Model. She came to Deauville at the end of July and ran a close second. Stan Moore will be saddling Debutante’s Ball for the fourth time at Deauville and she was a well beaten sixth in a listed race six days ago.
DEAUVILLE SUNDAY
The six-furlong Darley Prix Morny is the last Group 1 event of the season at Deauville. It has been won by visiting juveniles for the past five years and this series could be stopped and, possibly, by an Irish-owned, French-trained filly.
Matthieu Palussiere trains Different League for Theresa Marnane and the daughter of Dabirsim can follow in the footsteps of her sire who won the Morny in 2011.
She has yet to taste defeat in three outings and caused a little upset at Royal Ascot when defeating the much fancied Alpha Centauri in the Group 3 Albany Stakes.
Karl Burke has a strong hand to play as he runs Havana Grey and Unfortunately, winner of the Prix Robert Papin. However, he will again come up against High Dream Milena who many thought was hampered at a crucial moment in that Group 2 contest.
Havana Grey has won four races this season and, most recently, the Group 3 Bombay Sapphire Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood. Nyaleti from the Mark Johnston stable will also have plenty of supporters. Her effort in the Group 3 Princess Margaret Stakes at Ascot was outstanding as she came home five lengths clear.
The French defence is much strengthened by the presence of Tantheem and Zonza. The Group 3 Prix de Cabourg was the trial for the Morny and Tantheem made short work of the opposition.
The unbeaten Zonza won the Group 3 Prix du Bois at this track but will have to last a furlong longer this time.
PRIX JEAN ROMANET
The English have won tomorrow’s Group 1 Darley Prix Jean Romanet for the past three years. Four fillies and mares have crossed the Channel this time and their presence adds a little spice to the Group 1 event.
John Gosden was awarded the 10-furlong contest in 2012 with Izzi Top. This year the Newmarket trainer relies on So Mi Dar. Second in last season’s Prix de l’Opera Longines, a muscle problem led to her missing the Prince of Wales’s Stakes but she was a reasonable fifth to Winter in the Qatar Nassau Stakes after running rather free.
Sir Michael Stoute runs the former South African mare Smart Call. She ran a fair fourth to Qemah in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes but disappointed when only seventh in the Pretty Polly at the Curragh.
Trained by Roger Varian, Ajman Princess looks to have more on her plate and the same comment can also be applied to Martyn Meade’s Wilamina.
If Left Hand can find the form which led her to winning the Qatar Prix Vermeille last September, she will be in with a chance. The filly has taken time to come to hand this season but she has been fourth in the Grand Prix de Chantilly and fifth in the Group 1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. Last season she won a Group 3 race over the course and distance.
Trained by Freddy Head, Siyoushake tries this longer trip for the first time since May 2015. She was a close third to Roly Poly in the Group 1 Prix Rothschild. When she ran second in the Group 2 Prix Corrida, That Which Is Not had both Haggle and Left Hand behind her.
PRIX KERGORLAY
Just two French stayers runs in the Group 2 Darley Prix Kergorlay. Claude Le Lay and Holdthasigreen make up the domestic defence along with the Andre Fabre-trained Casterton, one of two three-year-olds in the 15-furlong contest. The English provide half the field of 10 and there are two German and one Italian in the line up.
The mare Endless Time appears to have good credentials to take a hand in the finish. She won the Markel Insurance Fillies Stakes at Goodwood and last October ran Vazirabad close in the Group 1 Prix Royal-Oak after a second in the Qatar Prix Vermeille.
Hughie Morrison fields last year’s winner, Nearly Caught and Marmelo who appears to love France. He won the Prix de Barbeville in May and was runner in the Group 2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil in July when last seen. Nearly Caught won for the first time since last visit here in a listed race at Sandown in July.
Pallasator has yet to find his 2016 form for Sir Mark Prescott and was behind David Elsworth’s Desert Skyline in the Group 1 Qatar Goodwood Cup.
Red Cardinal is now trained in Germany and he recently landed the valuable Grade 3 Belmont Gold Cup Invitational Stakes after beating Nearly Caught in a Group 2 at Hoppgarten.
