DEAUVILLE SATURDAY
3.55 SHADWELL PRIX DE POMONE (GROUP 2) 1M 4F 110Y
Highlands Queen is now back with her regular partner Stephane Pasquier after disqualification in her last race, the Prix de Diane. Previously, she had routed the opposition in the Group 3 Prix Cleopatre. On that form, she should again easily hold both Mango Tango and Gargotiere, but it is her first run over this longer distance.
Al Wathna stayed all but half a furlong of the Pomone distance when winning the Group 2 Prix de Malleret at Saint-Cloud. Forever Popularcomes over from Newmarket. This filly is improving and made the grade in a listed race at Newmarket at the first time of asking. Contribution returns to this distance after several respectable runs over shorter trips. Mambomiss has more to find in the form book.
Selection: HIGHLANDS QUEEN
Next best: Al Wathna
DEAUVILLE SUNDAY
2.55 PRIX DU HARAS DE FRESNAY-LE-BUFFARD-JACQUES LE MAROIS (GROUP 1) 1M
André Fabre must have a good chance of winning his first Group 1 race in France this season as he saddles both Esoterique, who won this famous straight mile a year ago, and Vadamos. The bang-in-form Jean-Claude Rouget will hope to extend his lead in the trainer’s table with Ervedya.
Five English raiders have been sent across the Channel, including dual Group 1 winner Galileo Gold.
Trained by Hugo Palmer, the colt is no stranger to France as he finished third to Ultra in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere last October. This season, he triumphed in the 2000 Guineas and in the St James’s Palace Stakes before going under to his old rival The Gurkha in the Sussex Stakes.
Vadamos has now found his true distance. He trounced Ervedya in the Prix du Muguet and was equally impressive when winning the Prix Messidor at Maisons-Laffitte last month.
After success in this race a year ago, Esoterique took the Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket but she has not reproduced her best form this season, although she had a poor start when fourth to Qemah over the course and distance in the Prix Rothschild 13 days ago.
Ribchester is held by Galileo Gold judging by their meeting at Newmarket and also at Goodwood, where he finished fast and just failed to catch his old rival. In between, the colt looked classy when cantering home on soft ground in the seven-furlong Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Arod has yet to find the form that gave him the Summer Mile at Ascot before a second to Solow in the Sussex Stakes a year ago. Lightning Spear was fourth in this race a year ago and, more recently, was third in the Queen Anne Stakes and sixth in the Sussex last time out.
Stormy Antarctic runs for the third time in France. He went under narrowly to Johannes Vermeer in the Group 1 Criterium International last October and was runner-up to Zelzal in the Group 1 Prix Jean Prat last month. However, he was well behind Galileo Gold in the 2000 Guineas.
Dicton deserves some respect. He took the Prix de Fontainebleau before finishing a remote third behind The Gurkha in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains and then third again in the longer (10 and 1/2 furlongs) Prix du Jockey Club. The colt is coming back to his best distance.
Selection: GALILEO GOLD
Next best: Vadamos
4.10 PRIX MINERVE (GROUP 3) 1M 4F 110Y
The Juliet Rose is one of the most talented fillies in this race but she must concede weight (2 1/2lb) to the other eight runners. She won the Group 3 Prix de Royaumont at Chantilly before running unplaced in a rough Prix de Diane.
On a line through Al Wathna in the Royaumont, there should not be much between The Juliet Rose and Impressionist, who was beaten a neck by Al Wathna in the Group 2 Prix de Malleret.
Sotteville has won her last four races, but all have been at provincial tracks and this will be her first run in group company. Golden Valentine is in good form and she was giving weight away to the opposition when picking up a listed race at Saint-Cloud last month.
Deremah is highly regarded and back to her best distance after finishing second on the all-weather at Chantilly in June. Khaleesy is a recent listed winner at Vichy, where Pakora won a conditions race.
Selection: IMPRESSIONIST
Next best: Deremah
DEAUVILLE MONDAY
2.25 PRIX DE LIEUREY (GROUP 3) 1M
André Fabre has supplemented the Godolphin-owned pair Come Alive and Switching into this mile, which will also be contested by the same owner’s Mise En Rose, while Richard Hannon will be represented by Light Up Our World. She picked up a listed contest at Sandown before being third in a Group 3 race at Goodwood. Since winning a handicap at Newmarket, Mise En Rose has been runner-up in a Group 3 event at Goodwood.
The most interesting filly in the field is Trixia. She won the Group 3 Prix des Reservoirs over the course and distance last October and has not been out since fourth to the brilliant Qemah in the Prix de la Grotte last April.
Midweek was giving weight when just touched off by Come Alive last time out. Previously, she had a poor run when eighth to Minding in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket. Rosay was fourth in the Prix de Sandringham and Antonoe has not found the form that won her the Group 3 Prix d’Aumale last September.
Selection: TRIXIA
Next best: Midweek
3.00 PRIX GUILLAIME D’ORNANO-HARAS DU LOGIS SAINT-GERMAIN (GROUP 2) 1M 2F
The Prix du Jockey Club winner Almanzor and runner-up Zarak clash again. The margin between them was a length and a half, but the latter did not have the best of runs. Neither has run since.
Sky Kingdom, Royal Artillery and Steel Of Madrid have been sent over from England and the enigma in the 10-furlong event is Godolphin’s Ultra. He won the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere and was being prepared for the Investec Derby but threw a splint. The colt reappeared in the Prix Eugene Adam and went under to Heshem, but he could reverse the form here.
Taareef is also a decent colt. He came with a fine late run to collar the favourite George Patton in the Group 3 Prix Daphnis. John Gosden saddled Royal Artillery to win the Group 3 Rose of Lancaster Stakes at Haydock in good style but this is a big step up in class. This same applies to Sky Kingdom and Steel Of Madrid, who finished ahead of that colt in the Tercentenary Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Selection: ULTRA
Next best: Almanzor
3.40 PRIX GONTAUT-BIRON-HONG KONG JOCKEY CLUB (GROUP 3) 1M 2F
This looks to be at the mercy of New Bay, although James Fanshawe will try and put a spanner in the works with Arthenus. New Bay won last year’s Prix du Jockey Club, Prix Guillaume d’Ornano and Prix Niel before taking third place to Golden Horn in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
The son of Dubawi has had just one run this season, where he was a distant sixth in the Prix d’Ispahan at Chantilly. He should totally outclass this field.
Garlingari needs cut in the ground to show his best. He must concede weight (7lb) to all his four rivals but won both the Prix Exbury and Group 2 Prix d’Harcourt earlier in the season before running well is several high-class events. Last time out, the ground was a little lively for him in the Grand Prix de Vichy.
Arthenus made no show last time out at York where he landed a decent handicap last year. Royal Dolois is a soft ground specialist and held by Garlingari on recent Vichy form.
Selection: NEW BAY
Next best: Garlingari
