Ronan Groome
2:00 RAINBOW COMMUNICATIONS MAIDEN 5F
Wolfofbaggotstreet will almost certainly start favourite off the back of a second place finish to Coventry Stakes third Murillo on his previous run at Tipperary. That was just his second start and prior to that he had run well in a good Navan maiden won by Romanised.
Damselfly has some nice form in the book herself and may have bumped into a useful newcomer in Dermot Weld’s India Rain last time out at Cork, the pair of them pulling four lengths clear in a fair maiden. She can run well again but Johnny Murtagh’s horse has more scope to progress on his third start.
Selection: WOLFOFBAGGOTSTREET
Next best: Damselfly
2:35 LOUIS ROEDERER HANDICAP 5F
This looks a decent opportunity for Miss Power who finds herself in a race full of exposed and/or out of form horses. Eddie Lynam’s filly has only run four times and she has won twice.
Her previous run was good, finishing second to Ger Lyons’s Celebration, with subsequent listed race runner up Go Kart (who she also beat on her penultimate run) behind her in third. She was raised 3lbs for that effort, but even taking that into account, she should take all the beating here.
Independence Day may be able to put up the biggest fight. He was previously trained by David Wachman for whom he was Group 3-placed as a two-year-old. He did little on three starts for Robert Cowell in Britain but now may be able to turn the corner on his first start for Stevie Donohue, back at a track he won his maiden by five lengths.
Selection: MISS POWER
Next best: Independence Day
3:10 VALUE CABS HANDICAP 6F 180Y
A trappy 45-65 handicap of which a chance is taken on recent Fairyhouse scorer Guiding Star. Patrick McKenna’s three-year-old had been in good form when regularly raiding Britain prior to that run but was most impressive, in the context of this race, when winning at the Meath track yesterday week. He has a 10lb rise to contend with but has the services of Chris Hayes again and should go close against these older horses.
Captain Midnight is an exposed handicapper but he is consistent and is nearly always there or thereabouts. He has been freshened up since running at Dundalk over the winter and he should get competitive again in this modest contest.
Selection: GUIDING STAR
Next best: Captain Midnight
3:45 MAGNERS ULSTER DERBY 1M 4F 150Y
This will be a highly competitive betting heat as it’s difficult to rule out any of the nine horses set to line up. Ger Lyons tends to target this race and he runs two, of which Percy, the choice of Colin Keane, looks the most interesting.
He is by Kodiac but when tried over this sort of distance in the listed race won by Grandee at Leopardstown, he stayed on really well late in the race, finishing a never nearer third.
He has been put up 1lb for that run, but now that connections know he will stay, they can ride him accordingly and the better ground will be a big help as well.
There are any amount of dangers such as Noel Meade’s Wingingit and Jessica Harrington’s Tilly’s Chilli, who are both progressing and come into his off multiple wins.
But Druids Cross gets the ‘next best’ vote. Joseph O’Brien thought enough of the son of Cape Cross to let him take his chance in the Chester Vase and although he was a no show there, he has since shown signs of talent on his two runs, especially on his latest effort at Cork where he ran Steel Prince close.
Selection: PERCY
Next best: Druids Cross
4:15 COOLMORE STUD EBF ULSTER OAKS 1M 2F
Gavin Cromwell’s Pandagreen won impressively at Leopardstown last month and she can go in again here. She is a three-year-old taking on the older horses and this will be just her seventh ever run, coming in off the back of a career best effort. She was well-backed at Leopardstown as if to suggest she was a well-handicapped horse, which she probably was, and so if just a 6lb higher mark here, she may still have a bit in hand.
Willie McCreery’s Elm Grove is in the form of her life, having won two of her last four races and though she finished last of five in a listed race at Ayr on her previous run, that wasn’t at all a bad effort. Back into handicap company, and with the talented apprentice Nathan Crosse taking 7lbs off her back, she can put up another big performance.
Selection: PANDAGREEN
Next best: Elm Grove
4:45 DOWN ROYAL HANDICAP 1M 2F
Not much to go on in this trappy handicap where a tentative vote goes to Roses Need Rain for Tyrone trainer Andy Oliver. She has run three times this season and performed with credit twice, most recently last Sunday at Cork when beaten just under three lengths by Queluz.
She has run just seven times in her life and three times on turf so she may be able to progress past her current rating of 60. She also wears cheekpieces for the first time in her bid to achieve that feat.
Mystery Gal has been in good form, winning on her penultimate start before finishing fifth, when impeded in running, at Fairyhouse off a 5lb higher mark. She is 1lb out of the handicap here but should run well again with Chris Hayes back in the saddle.
Selection: ROSES NEED RAIN
Next best: Mystery Gal
5:15 IRISH STALLION FARMS EBF MEDIAN AUCTION MAIDEN 1M 2F
Mystic Traveller may be able to takes this valuable maiden. He ran well when third to So You Thought on his seasonal debut at Navan, just his ever second start, and with that in mind, there’s good reason to expect improvement.
His trainer Ger Lyons has also entered Spiral Galaxy who ran with credit on his first start of the season but stable jockey Colin Keane has elected to ride Mystic Traveller which endorses the son of Intikhab’s chances.
Tea For Two has run well on both of her starts, improving from her debut third at Cork to go close at Gowran Park on her latest start. She should get involved again, getting weight from all but one of her rivals.
Selection: MYSTIC TRAVELLER
Next best: Tea For Two
