The form of Jewel In A Crowd’s third in a maiden here on Derby weekend has been working out extremely well. The winner and second, Abraham Lincoln and Haffener, have only just been denied in Group 2s at Newmarket and Goodwood since, while the fourth, Man’s Best Friend, landed the Group 2 Richmond Stakes at Goodwood last week. Yes, all three of those rivals were Ballydoyle colts debuting, so were open to clear improvement, but there was plenty to like about how Ciaran Murphy’s Hello Youmzain colt finished off that day after a slow beginning.

New Bond Street has form tying in with Man’s Best Friend, having finished third at Naas behind that rival, and Paddy Twomey’s string is in rude health at present. She holds a big chance and must be showing up well at home to have been sent off 1/2 favourite and 11/8 favourite on both her starts. Snowing, the mount of Ryan Moore, bumped into the well-regarded Concorde Landed last time. Atlantic Bridge was only beaten a length here when fourth on debut last month and should step forward.

1.45 Grand Hotel Malahide Irish EBF Fillies Juvenile Race 7f

A traditionally hot race that was won by Diamond Necklace 12 months ago. This is likely to be strong again, but a tentative vote goes to Donnacha O’Brien’s debutante Miss Hong Kong - the trainer’s only entry in this year’s Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes. A €165,000 yearling, this Churchill filly is a full-sister to the yard’s Naval Force, who won on debut over a mile at two and was sold to Hong Kong after reaching an official rating of 101 at three.

Brendan Duke’s impressive Gowran winner Sword Of State is of interest, though this looks a much stronger race and she must concede 7lb to a field of maidens. Ibelieveicanfly is a danger. She was initially favourite to beat her high-flying stablemate Alpha on debut (when the choice of Ryan Moore) and hasn’t quite hit major heights yet. However, she’s got three runs to her name now and looks a work in progress who is capable of better.

2.15 Guidenstown Stud Irish EBF Maiden 7f

Shakespeare gave the impression he is a maiden winner waiting to happen when runner-up to Green Dreamer at Leopardstown last time and he has the experience of two runs behind him coming here. He ought to be good enough to win a maiden like this, albeit we are dealing with a lot of unknown quantities in opposition.

Anchor Road finished an eye-catching fifth on debut in the aforementioned maiden won by Abraham Lincoln. He didn’t appear to enjoy front-running when third to the highly-touted Porto Vecchio here since and the runner-up, Victory Speech, has since gone to Galway and won a maiden readily.

2.50 Sheehy Motors Volkswagen Handicap 5f

This dash went the way of a three-year-old filly 12 months ago and history could repeat itself here, with Johnny Feane’s lightly-raced Finika. After a promising third on her second outing at Cork, this daughter of top sire Mehmas got off the mark in good style at Cork over six furlongs last month. The runner-up had only been beaten a head in a maiden at this venue previously. Her lack of experience is a concern, but she gets in here off a feather weight of 8st 8lb and looks open to progress.

Denis Hogan’s Sarahmae bids for back-to-back wins in this race, and wasn’t beaten far behind today’s rival Ipanema Queen when fifth at Cork last time. The 10lb claim of Jared Huggan brings her right down in the weights and she clearly likes it here.

It’s difficult to know where exactly we stand with Big Mojo after finishing down the field in the July Cup. He ended up racing towards the stand’s side rail - away from the main body of the field - and raced with the choke out, which clearly did him no favours at the business end. That was a red-hot Group 1 and he’s now well down in grade (has won both starts at Group 3 level). A top-level winner in the Sprint Cup at Haydock last year, he was only beaten two and a quarter lengths by Mission Central at Royal Ascot two starts ago.

Fellow British raider James’s Delight posted a solid showing when third in the Greenlands behind Comanche Brave two starts ago, and that form obviously looks even better since the winner followed up in the July Cup. Big Gossey finished a half length in front of him then and is back at his favourite stomping ground for a rematch. He’s entitled to be bang there again, but is officially 6lb wrong with the selection.

While he has been frustrating to follow lately, Go Athletico has been firing some real warning shots and needs to be taken seriously now back to a course and distance that suits him well. He was nudged up 4lb for his Galway second last week, behind an in-form stablemate, and finished a cracking sixth from 3lb out of the handicap in the 20-runner Scurry here previously.

If Jon Riggens’ confidence is up from a recent first success since October 2024, he’ll be on the premises off only 4lb higher. The combination of cheekpieces, a tongue-tie and good claiming rider could bring more out in Nazario.

It was a fair vote of confidence behind Goal Exceeded when Adam Caffrey picked him over stablemates Eddie G and Go Atheltico in a Galway Festival handicap last time. He finished on their heels in fourth then over seven furlongs and there’s every chance returning to a more orthodox track like the Curragh (where he has won before) will bring out more in him. The winner also got first run on him to an extent last time. He won a 20-runner handicap in good style here off just 3lb lower last year.

Booyea brings a classy level of form to the table after finishing second to the well-handicapped Pierre Royal here on Irish Derby day. He has the ability to be a force in this, but he’s more than two years without a win. Recent winners Summer Island, Marmeladova and Kalir are worthy of shortlist inclusion.
