The market will be the best guide to what is expected from the three Ballydoyle runners, but without the benefit of seeing that, a chance is taken on the Ger Lyons-trained Jack Flash. The son of Dark Angel realised €135,000 as a yearling and has been given an entry in the Railway Stakes.

Lyons has his horses in excellent form and market support for him would be significant. Of those that have run, the Johnny Murtagh-trained Grand Coalition warrants respect following his solid debut at Dundalk last month.

A tricky maiden to decipher and preference is given to the Joe Murphy-trained Camellia Japonica. The daughter of Zoffany ran a stormer on her debut to finish a close second to Leafy Shade in a maiden over this course and distance, but stumbled and unseated her rider on her next start. She is entitled to come on from her recent return to action at Naas and with the return to this shorter trip being likely to help, she can be expected to run a big race.

The main danger to her could well be the Tommy Stack-trained Short Stacked based on the pick of his form in maidens.

Really competitive fare and the one that makes the most appeal is the Johnny Levins-trained Your Pal Tal.

The six-year-old has dropped to a 13lb lower mark than that off which he finished second in the Scurry Handicap at this track last summer.

He has recently returned to form at Dundalk and with him being well drawn, a big effort from him would not surprise. Another well-drawn contender that catches the eye is the Ann Marie O’Shea-trained Fainleog. The five-year-old has improved markedly since joining her current trainer and dropping in trip and she shaped well enough in a listed race at Naas last time to suggest she can be competitive off this sort of mark back at this shorter trip.

An intriguing renewal of this race and the Joe Murphy-trained Only Mine could well come out on top.

The daughter of Pour Moi produced a much-improved effort to bolt up in the Group 3 Lacken Stakes at Naas last weekend, easily seeing off the strongly-fancied Washington DC.

There was no fluke about that victory and a repeat of that effort will make her tough to beat. The pick of her opposition is the Eddie Lynam-trained Fort Del Oro as while she was disappointing on her latest start, she was in season on that occasion and has a big chance if returning to her best.

Selection: ONLY MINE

Mick Halford’s team seems to be coming into form and he will saddle a very interesting sort for this contest in Portage. The four-year-old progressed steadily in a light campaign last season, shaping as though more would be forthcoming this season. This longer trip will suit and he is a fascinating contender. Without question his most interesting rival is the Ger Lyons-trained Chemical Charge, with the son of Sea The Stars not having been seen on the racecourse since winning both his starts as a juvenile for Ralph Beckett in 2014.

Another competitive handicap and the Ger Lyons-trained Newsman is given the nod. The son of Mafki bounced back from a below-form run at Gowran Park to run very well when second to Maneen over this course and distance last time. This sounder surface should play to his strengths and a bold bid is likely to be forthcoming from him. A solid alternative to him is the Brendan Duke-trained The Mouse Doctor following his solid second at Naas last time.

A maiden that doesn’t appear to have much depth and it represents a good opportunity for the Jim Bolger-trained Stellar Mass to get off the mark at the eighth attempt. The son of Sea The Stars was only beaten a length by Port Douglas in the Group 2 Beresford Stakes at the Curragh last season and while he has been below that form in his three starts this season, this will be the first time he has tackled a sound surface this campaign. He sets a high standard. His most interesting rival is perhaps the Aidan O’Brien-trained Big Ben, with him being a half-brother to the top-class filly Attraction and realising 750,000gns as a yearling.
