1.05 Coolmore Stud St Mark’s Basilica Irish EBF Maiden 7f

A two-year-old maiden for unraced horses, so a good deal of guesswork will be involved based on pedigree and trainers in the mix. A chance is taken on Joseph O’Brien getting off to a winning start with his new backers Juddmonte, as they are represented for the first time together by Kingman colt Monogram. He already holds a Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes entry.

Iveagh House could make a winning introduction for Aidan O’Brien under Wayne Lordan. The Starspangledbanner colt has a mix of speed and stamina in his pedigree. Robson de Aguiar’s Salt Lake has sound claims on paper, while the Ger Lyons-trained Herald’s March is another for the shortlist.

Plenty of these bring a solid level of form to the table, without the standard being outstanding. Acula shaped encouragingly when making headway from behind for fourth on her Naas debut over a mile earlier this month. Stepping up in trip should be ideal, albeit her draw in stall 14 isn’t.

The form of Saxony Charms’ maiden that she finished third in on debut here hasn’t quite worked out as strongly as hoped, and she was turned over since, but she could have more to come in the first-time cheekpieces as an unexposed filly. Handani and Let’s Smash It are closely enough matched on their Leopardstown meeting last time and should be on the premises again.

2.15 Mitsubishi Electric Handicap 6f

Jon Riggens might have taken confidence from regaining the winning thread for the first time since October 2024 last time at Navan. He’s 3lb out of the handicap, which obviously isn’t ideal, but if he’s on his game that won’t be the aspect that stops him - and Reece Holohan has been impressing for a young rider still with his 7lb claim. The Eddie Lynam-trained veteran won this race in 2023 before finishing fourth and third in the two subsequent editions. Stablemate Keke is at the polar opposite end of the weights and certainly wasn’t disgraced when tried over seven furlongs in listed company last week (fourth to Suzie Songs at Cork).

He’s generally pretty reliable and this looks his best trip, even if he’s higher in the handicap than ideal. Plenty hold claims, but don’t rule out a big showing from Finika, who probably found things very sharp over five furlongs on her handicap debut as an inexperienced filly. She looked smart when winning her maiden the previous time.

SELECTION: JON RIGGENS

2.50 Alpha Centauri Debutante Stakes (Group 2) (Fillies) 7f

Only five runners, and each of them trained by either Aidan or Joseph O’Brien, but there is undoubtedly high quality on offer with these fillies. Alpha was deeply impressive in winning her maiden here on Irish Derby day and, after showing a workmanlike attitude to win the Silver Flash since, can come on from that effort to extend her winning sequence on her way to the Moyglare Stakes. She’s bred to be top drawer and Wayne Lordan prefers her over stablemate Ibelieveicanfly, who looks highly talented in her own right.

That Frankel filly was actually the choice of Ryan Moore over Alpha on debut and has been improving with racing, as shown last time when bolting up in what is traditionally a strong fillies’ event on Phoenix Stakes day. Perhaps she is more of a work in progress than her stablemate and one for next season, but she is clearly talented. Joseph O’Brien’s Airlie Stud Stakes second Green Empress has finished second to the excellent Sun Goddess on both her starts. She is well worth a try at seven furlongs and looks highly capable in her own right.

SELECTION: ALPHA

3.25 Coolmore Stud City Of Troy Tom Cooper Irish EBF Futurity Stakes (Group 2) 7f

City Of Dubai won a smart maiden at Killarney on debut and is bound to have learned a bundle from finishing second at Gowran in a listed event since. That run behind Sergei Diaghilev over a mile was a decent effort in defeat.

Giant Sequoia is the choice of Wayne Lordan and showed improvement when winning a maiden here last time. He’s got the potential for further progress, though the likes of Chesham Stakes scorer Nola Soul have a higher level of form established. It’s intriguing to see Dylan Browne McMonagle prefer Nail House over Green Dreamer, given the latter’s maiden form was given a boost by runner-up Shakespeare winning a maiden decisively here recently.

SELECTION: CITY OF DUBAI

Next best: Nola Soul

4.00 Neville O’Byrne Memorial Irish EBF Fillies & Mares Handicap 1m 4f

Stepping back up to a mile and a half should be a big positive for Vanir, who looked caught for speed at a mile and a quarter last time here. She had previously looked comfortable at this trip when winning at Fairyhouse and is entitled to be on the improve, given it was her handicap debut last time.

Yousaynothingatall was more than three lengths in front of the selection last time when a close second, and she’s jumped up 5lb since. However, only being 3lb worse off with Vanir for that run doesn’t look too bad. Whether she’s quite as good at this trip is arguably the question to answer. Navy Waters has been knocking on the door and deserves a change of luck, while Neo Smart never had a clear run last week here when not beaten all that far in a weaker race.

4.35 Comer Group International Irish St Leger Trial Stakes (Group 3) 1m 6f

Carmers has been given a nice window of time to freshen up since sixth in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot behind Scandinavia (beaten 12 lengths) and this could be a good chance for him to win his fourth blacktype contest. Last year’s Queen’s Vase winner and Great Voltigeur runner-up is arguably at his best around this trip and he’s got lots of experience in this staying discipline.

Kizlyar, fancied by many for the Ebor, must prove himself at this level, but did win an ultra-competitive Ascot Stakes Handicap last time and is worthy of being in this company. The drop in trip doesn’t look a worry. Queenstown has high-class form, but his 300-day absence means he’s probably opposable on his comeback.

Asakir was only seventh in the Queen’s Vase, but has the shape of a smart stayer for the back-end of this season and beyond for Johnny Murtagh.

5.08 Friends Of Moorefield GAA Handicap 6f

A tough affair to conclude proceedings. Hugo’s Girl fired a warning shot here last time when second to today’s rival Mint Man and a 1lb nudge for that effort still leaves her in a reasonable place with the handicapper. She’s in far more consistent and good form than most of these rivals.

Mint Man, up 6lb for that win on Phoenix Stakes day, will be best if the rain stays away and it looks a shrewd move from Pat Murphy to claim 7lb off him with the useful Conor Cusack. The five-year-old isn’t the most frequent of winners, however.

Returning to six furlongs looks a positive for Bold Optimist on the basis of what he showed over five furlongs here last week.
