THREE European challengers line up to contest the two Grade 1 races at Woodbine this evening.
In the Woodbine Mile, Lord Glitters and Stormy Antarctic both bring Group 1 form, though neither horse has won at that level to date.
Lord Glitters follows a path for David O’Meara that has proved successful in picking up Grade 1 victories overseas. He won this with Mondialiste in 2015 and Suedois won the 2017 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland.
Lord Glitters finished second in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot and third in the Sussex Stakes and then won the Group 3 Strensall Stakes going nine furlongs at York, but the mile trip should suit.
Lord Glitters will be ridden in by Jamie Spencer who has four Grade 1 wins aboard Wigmore Hall, Just The Judge and Trade Storm at the track.
Stormy Antarctic just a length in the Group 2 Celebration Mile Stakes at Goodwood last month, and the winner Beat The Bank edged out Lord Glitters in the Summer Mile. He will be partnered by Gerald Mosse.
Among the North American representatives, the three-time Grade 1 winner and 2016 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf champion Oscar Performance, trained by Bill Mott, rates best. Last time out, he was pulled up late in the Arlington Million but no injury was found.
Oscar Performance should be able to track the pace and is the danger to the Europeans.
Divisidero, Good Samaritan and Delta Prince are all quality Grade 1 horses. Good Samaritan’s last eight races have come on dirt, but he won a Grade 2 over this course and distance. Divisidero is a dual Grade 1 winner.
The lightly-raced Stronach Stable runner Delta Prince has been made the 5/2 morning line favourite. He finished second by a neck in his most recent start, the Grade 1 Fourstardave Handicap at Saratoga. Trainer Jimmy Jerkens seems to have the son of Street Cry in top form and won over this course and distance in a fast time earlier this summer.
Also on the card, the Charlie Appleby-trained Hawkbill bids to go one better than last year in the Grade 1 Northern Dancer Turf Stakes.
Johnny Bear nailed the favourite Hawkbill on the wire to win last year and the pair will hook up once again in the one-and-a-half-mile race.
Hawkbill hasn’t built on his Sheema Classic winning- form of early in the season and was fourth in the International at York last time out.
The Graham Motion-trained Mekhtaal, a son of Sea The Stars who won the Group 1 Prix d’Ispahan last year, is among the challengers. He was second in the Grade 2 Nijinsky Stakes here last month.
SUNDAY
The Grade 1 Natalma Stakes for two-year-old fillies over a mile on Sunday evening (9.26 ATR) will see the appearance of the Jessica Harrington-trained Chicas Amigas, with Oisin Murphy on board in the Qatar Racing colours. She will need luck in running in a field of 15.
