Saratoga’s Grade 2 Jim Dandy Presented by Mohegan Sun (Sky, 10.44pm) over nine furlongs is a prep-race for the Travers in three weeks and a race for later developing three-year-olds. It might be a small field of five but it’s an intriguing contest with two of the well-fancied Kentucky Derby also-rans back in action.

Commandment holds a slight morning line advantage as race favourite

Brad Cox’s Into Mischief colt Commandment, in the Wathnan Racing colours, was seventh to Golden Tempo in the Kentucky Derby and then second in the Belmont Stakes with Renegade four lengths behind him. With very little obvious pace in the race, he wears first time blinkers and could dictate.

Renegade bids to get back on the winning track after fine efforts when second in the Kentucky Derby and then third in the Belmont. Todd Pletcher believes he will improve on his Belmont run off a stiffer prep for this.

Steven Asmussen’s Chip Honcho is also worth considering off is third in the Preakness and win next time in the Grade 3 Ohio Derby.

Mark Casse’s Silent Tactic hasn’t run since he was beaten four lengths by Renegade in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby in March. Renegade just might have enough toe in the finish if ridden just off the pace.

Eastern invaders, Juddmonte’s Chasten, a half-sister to champion Idiomatic, for trainer Brad Cox, and the well-travelled Eunomia, who has been training most recently at Saratoga for Saffie Joseph Jr, head the field for the Grade 1 Clement L. Hirsch Stakes along with Bob Baffert’s favourite Seismic Beauty.

Om N Joy beat Simply Joking and Seismic Beauty last time out in the Grade 2 Santa Margarita Stakes at Santa Anita.
