ANN and Alan Potts have a number of really exciting horses running in their colours this season and I am delighted that I’ve been able to ride the majority of those who’ve been transferred to the UK from Ireland.
The couple moved around 15 horses to Colin Tizzard’s yard, following the retirement of Colm Murphy, and I am in their yellow and green colours in three races at Cheltenham today.
I’m very grateful for their support and hopefully can reward them with some winners over the course of the season.
Sizing Codelco represents us in the big race, the Caspian Caviar Gold Cup. He was fancied for the BetVictor Handicap Chase but he was running flat out in top gear the whole race so, in the end, I looked after him as best I could. That was over two miles so this extra half-mile will definitely suit and he will show an improvement from his last run as a result.
It does look a very, very competitive race, as you’d expect for a £100,000 prize, and Village Vic could be my idea as the likeliest winner. He has a terrific recent record at Cheltenham, including two wins and a second from his last four runs. He showed what great form he was in last time, only just been run down by Taquin Du Seul at the end of the BetVictor Gold Cup. I think whoever beats him will be the winner.
I was really encouraged by Sizing Tennessee’s second to O O Seven here at the Open meeting last month. He is a very uncomplicated ride and belied his odds on what was his first start over fences. There’s no reason why he can’t run another very solid race in the Ryman Novices’ Chase.
Sizing Platinum was another who gave me great encouragement when he finished second to Fox Norton at the track in October.
He went on to finish ninth in the BetVictor Gold Cup but this race, the Raymond Mould Handicap Chase, represents an easier task and cannot be discounted, especially with Colin’s horses in such good form.
My best chance of a winner could lie with West Approach, who always runs with credit. He was caught after the last at the Open meeting, finishing third in the end, just behind Wholestone, whom he had beaten on his previous start. Those two are very closely matched but hopefully we can get the better of him this time. He’s got a good chance of landing the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle.
I’ve got some nice rides at Carlisle tomorrow, and the pick could be Fionn Mac Cul in the Carlisle Annual Members Chase. He ran some nice races for Venetia Williams over hurdles, but fences were always going to be his game and he’s now got his chance to show what he can do.
