THE Muskerry Foxhounds are holding two meetings next weekend.

The first is on Sunday at the showgrounds in Curraheen where funds are also being raised in aid of Cork Cancer Research. There will be plenty of good food on offer and entertainment for children.

Thirty years ago Michael Phillips, business manager at Gain Horse Feeds, rode two winners and two second-placed horses at this fixture which was then held at Ryecourt, Farnanes.

Pat Healy did likewise, while Jimmy Mangan landed the open lightweight on the Golden Love gelding Neville’s-Delight who managed nine wins between the flags.

Ten years later, the Muskerrys’ Sunday meeting was held at Dromahane where Phillips won the concluding older geldings’ maiden on C’Murra who was backed down from 5/1 to 6/4 favourite and obliged by eight lengths.

The late John Thomas McNamara landed the opening five and six-year-olds colts and geldings maiden on Shenanigans while the City Life/Eagle Star four-year-old final went to the Enda Bolger-partnered even-money favourite Garrison Friendly.

Derek O’Connor recorded a treble at the 2007 meeting in Dromahane which he initiated in the opening four-year-old geldings’ maiden on Plaisir d’Estruval.

Unfortunately, after winning two hurdle races and two chases, sadly suffered a fatal fall in the 2010 Topham Chase at Aintree.

The four-runner open lightweight at the point-to-point that day was won by the Trevor Hemmings-owned Arctic Times who was ridden by Richie McLernon.

The Muskerrys are also staging a meeting on Bank Holiday Monday at Dawstown where, in 2007, Richie Harding won three races, including the open on the six-year-old The Dark Distroyer.

The rider completed his treble in the first division of the mares’ maiden on the similarly-aged Ballinvella Queen, while Richie McLernon landed division two on the nine-year-old Sweet Music.
