MENTIONED briefly in this column recently in an early preview of the Duhallow Foxhounds’ meeting at Liscarroll on Sunday, March 20th, Stowaway Magic made a winning racecourse debut in division two of the bumper at Kempton last Friday week.

The five-year-old Stowaway gelding was sent off at the fairly generous odds of 5/1 before beating Onthewesternfront (3/1) and the 9/4 favourite Golden Birthday by one and a half lengths and 12 lengths.

Stowaway Magic had landed the four-year-old maiden at Liscarroll last March on his only start between the flags, scoring by two and a half lengths in the hands of Declan Queally.

Then trained for partner Maria Byrne by Denis Murphy, the bay, who is out of the Ali-Royal mare Irish Mystics (an own-sister to Dyrick Daybreak), made £100,000 when sent to the following month’s Brightwells sale at Cheltenham. This was a nice profit on the €25,000 Denis had paid for the gelding at Tattersalls’ 2014 August Sale.

In finishing first past the post last Friday week, Stowaway Magic became the fourth winner at last season’s Liscarroll meeting to subsequently score on the track following Killabraher Cross (winners of one), Articulum (five-year-old geldings’ maiden) and Hit The Highway (older geldings’ maiden).
