HALF of the eight winners at the North Cornwall meeting in Wadebridge on Sunday were Irish-bred with Air Glider initiating a double for trainer Dean Summersby and rider Darren Edwards in the opening three-runner hunt race.

Sent off at odds of 2/5, the seven-year-old Mountain High gelding scored by a dozen lengths on his first start in a British point-to-point and his stable-companion, the eight-year-old Well Chosen gelding Chosen Well, landed the 12-runner restricted by two lengths at odds of 6/4.

Laura Thomas brought up a training double in the men’s open with the eight-year-old Vertical Speed gelding Full Trottle, who won by four lengths in the hands of Johnny Bailey, while Vicky Wade scored a half-length success in the first division of the open maiden on the Roy Smith-owned and trained Come On Joey.

The 6/4 favourite, who finished third to Chosen Well at this venue in November, is the last of 10 foals out of the King’s Ride mare Thousand Springs, the best of whom was the Grade 2-placed hurdle-winner Five Colours (by Lord Americo). As a four-year-old, Come On Joey was a €1,000 purchase by Smith at the 2015 August Sale in Tattersalls.

Josh Newman also recorded a riding double at this North Cornwall meeting when claiming the final two races on the card.

There were just two Irish-bred winners at Larkhill where Meath native Martin McIntyre landed the opening club members’ conditions race on the Teresa Clark-trained 10-year-old Subtle Power gelding Subtle Sovereign.

The eight-year-old Sir Harry Lewis gelding V Neck completed a double for rider Will Biddick and a treble for trainer Jack Barber when winning the 18-runner restricted by two and a quarter lengths. The bay, who is out of the King’s Ride mare Swift Settlement, has only run five times in his career.

Young Welsh rider Lorcan Williams combined with Devon trainer Sally Alner to complete a double.

There were a similar number of Irish-bred winners at the West Percy fixture in Alnwick, the men’s open winner Ardea, a nine-year-old Millenary gelding, initiating a double for trainer/farrier Justin Landy and rider Joe Wright.

The concluding open maiden was won by the six-year-old Island House gelding Dynamic Island who was ridden by Rory Bevin for his parents Louise (trainer) and William (owner).

The even-money favourite, who ran here for the Shirley Berry yard, is the second of just four foals out of the unraced Supreme Leader mare Curragh Bawn Lass, an own-sister to Eternal Lady and a half-sister to seven other winners including Sunday’s Aghabullogue fourth B.L. Swagger.
