I WAS delighted to see Royal Tara win the confined maiden at Quakerstown on Sunday for owner/trainer John Hassett.

The 2009 Kayf Tara bay, who brought up a double for rider Stephen Connor, had pulled-up on his only previous start in a five-year-old geldings’ maiden at Kildorrery in February 2014, while it is some time since his trainer, who is also a veterinary surgeon, enjoyed the glory days of Baby Brew and Eliogarty.

The latter, a 1975 Lucky Brief gelding, won nearly all the top hunter chases in Ireland and Britain under Caroline Beasley who now, as Caroline Robinson, was also on the mark over the weekend sending out the 10-year-old Milan gelding Oh Toodles to win the Skinner’s ladies’ open at Sandon on Saturday.

Also at Quakerstown, it was great that a Costello rode a winner even if it was in the post-racing pony race. Well done to Emily who is already well-established on the show jumping circuit.
