THERE were four point-to-point graduates on the mark at Naas last Sunday including the Jim Dreaper-trained Venitien De Mai who, in beating his stable-companion Goonyella by six lengths, justified 100/30 favouritism in the featured Leinster National.
The imposing Yeats bay Shattered Love made a successful racecourse debut when landing the mares’ bumper in the hands of Luke McGuinness who was recording his second success on the track.
Now trained by Gordon Elliott, Gigginstown House Stud’s Shattered Love was in the care of Pat Doyle when Derek O’Connor guided her to victory in a four-year-old mares’ maiden at Lemonfield last year, on her only point-to-point start.
Also scoring on Sunday in the Gigginstown colours in the three-mile maiden hurdle was the Noel Meade-trained A Genie In Abottle. The Beneficial gelding too made just the one appearance between the flags when claiming a four-year-old maiden at Bartlemy last May for owners the Monbeg Syndicate and trainer Donnchadh Doyle.
Unfortunately, the Meade-trained Aengus just failed to peg back Total Recall in the earlier handicap hurdle over two miles, three furlongs.
I say unfortunately as I would have soared up The Irish Field naps’ table had the 33/1 shot obliged. He was beaten just a neck by the Sandra Hughes-trained Total Recall whose point-to-point maiden victory had come on his fourth start at Rathmorrissey in March 2014 for the Neilan family.
