SUNDAY’s very successful side-saddle race at Lisronagh – which has been covered elsewhere by Leanne O’Sullivan on A57 – saw joint-organiser Jacqui Freyne finish third on a borrowed horse, Lisroe Warrior.

A member of the Tipperary Foxhounds and a very competitive sportswoman, Jacqui wasn’t too pleased with her own performance and knew that her start would not have gone down well with her late father, Dr Paddy Stokes, trainer, amateur rider and steward.

“He’d always say, ‘you can give weight, but you can’t give distance,’ and that’s where I went wrong!” said Jacqui. “I let the first two off too far before realising they were not coming back. I didn’t think that they could stay going that pace for the whole race. I was closing them down at the end but the line came too soon!”
